Davis writes to Lucinda detailing that he has no news of interest. He notes that newspapers are no longer allowed to be sold along the line, however he assumes there is an important move going on in the front. The letter is then continued on August 5. Davis notes that they moved camp and have been busy rebuilding. He details that he received his pay but will not yet be sending it home. Davis writes that he has not contacted the Regiment since arriving here and that he plans to see them soon. Davis also notes that while there is still no news of what is happening on the front, he suspects General Sherman is waiting on Commanding General Grant's movement east. He details that he received a letter from Brother William, who has had a hard campaign but is in good spirits. Davis notes that the 10th Iowa returned from furlough, and that Sam Coe mentioned they spent the 4th of July in Viroqua. Davis writes that President Lincoln and Congress set aside yesterday as a day of National Humiliation and prayer. He concludes by noting that his health is good as usual.
