No 3 Pioneer Corps 3rd Div 15th A.C. Cartersville Ga Aug 8th 1864 Dear Lucinda This is Sunday morning and I Set down to Spend a Short leisure time in writing you a Short Epistle in answer to your letter dated 26 & 27th of July which I Rec'd yesterday and was glad to hear that you was well; My health remains as good as usual your letters of late have come through verry prompt and in good time quicker than they come to Huntsville we had quite a heavey Shower of rain last night we have a Shower about Every other day though not Enough to Keep the ground muddy the weather is warm though not Excessively hot I have not n Rec'd ma^y letters Since I came down here besides yours; you said you would like to have my picture again if I could get it taken to See if I looked any better then I did in the last picture I sent you I dont think I could get a very hansom one taken now unless I would get a good looking man to Sit in my place: but I think I will not get one taken until I come home and then I will bring my picture to you: So the you can then tell which is ^ best looking [crossed out] [man] person: me or the man that left you and went to the Army: probably you had best not send your picture until I go home it may not get here before we Start: we may Start in a few weeks but it is uncertain when but it will probably not be a great while: I have not been to the regt yet but I think I will go down there to morrow as Some of the boys in the Reg,t [illegible] owing me Some money: I think they were paid yesterday. ___ I look at your picture and Charlies verry often but I think You are good Enough looking to make better picture than the one you sent and when I get home I will have See you try it over again and ^ if there cannot be an improvement made I like to see women appear well Especially one who I have as mutch regard for as yourself: both in manners and dress: by manners I do not mean good or bad behavior but a free and easy and an attractive appear ance. It is not the one that has the finest appearel that looks the best but one that has her clothes properly made fited and kept neat: a person Should always think him or herself as good as any body Else and no better than other good folks and be free to act when the motives are good: a their own person Should Study ^ Nature and cultivate deficiencies and Subdue Excesses of the mind where'ever they are found to occur: improve language as well in conversation as in writing: Study the force of words and learn to use them in their propper place: the mind Should be more Occupied in high Intellecual thoughts: problems and Suggestions than in neighborhood frivolties in which there is but little knowledge to be gained I do not write this as a sensure but only to attract your notice if it had not been for Silvie I Should have made arrangements to have you gone to School the most of the time I was in the army Well I have filled this sheet so I must close: I Remain as usual verry Truly your Ob't Husband T.J.
