No 5 Pioneer Corps 3rd Div 15th A.C. Cartersville Ga Aug 22nd 1864 Dear Wife I Sit down this morning to write you a few lines by way of informing you that I am in my usual health and Spirits. this is the third letter I have written to you since I rec'd one the last one was dated the 27th of last month: but the reason I have not rec'd any was: that the Rebel[crossed out] [s] raiders in Shermans Rear have attacked the R.R. in Several places and stoped the runing of Trains for several days. The rebs did no great deal of damage hower except that they took two companies of the 17th Iowa prisoners but they paroled them and let them go after taking their arms from them : we Expected an attack at this place but they did not come The Cars have resumed their regular trips but as yet I get no mail I felt certain I would get a letter from you last night and was verry mutch disappointed when I found there was none for me: but I think I will get one to night for as a general thing when I wait Several days to get a letter from you before I write: and then give it up and write any way I then generally get a letter from you the next mail : The weather is not so warm as when I wrote to before we had a heavy rain yesterday and last night and to day the atmosphere is quite pleasent. Ed Rogers Rec'd a letter from Joe Johnson a few days ago he was with his Regt, at Petersburg and was well he wrote rather a desponding letter: he thinks he has been misused ______________ we have had but little war news for several days but we learn that Farriguts [crossed out word] forces used up the most of the Rebel fleet at Mobile and that our forces are now in possesion of some of the rebel forts near the city Affairs around Atlanta remain about the Same as when I last wrote more heavy fighting has been going on Two Trains of rebel prisoners passed here yesteday going north I will not write mutch to day I will write more when I Receive a letter from you I Remain Ever your Affectionate Husband and Admirer T.J.
