Cartersville Ga Oct: 8th 1864 Dear Lucinda Once more I attempt to write you a few lines to let you Know that I do not forget though I receive no letters from you: I have not Rec'd any letter from you Since I wrote on account of the Railroad being torn up: neither do I think that you have rec'd letters regularly from me of late: Hood's Rebel army seems now to be broken into colums and trying to destroy the Railroad in Shermans Rear The Rebels attacked Alatoona last wednesday the 5th inst: with a large force when a heavy battle Ensued: and after about five hours heavy fighting the Rebels were Defeated with heavy loss We lost about Six hundred men Killed wound and missing and the Rebels lost between twelve and fifteen hundred Killed and wounded we only had about two thousand men engaged and the Rebels had between Six and Seven thousand but our men had the advantage of Breastworks and literally Strewed the hillsides with the Rebel dead and wounded . I was not there during the battle but I could hear the fighting here five miles distant verry distinctly and those that were there Say it was a verry hard fight for the number Engaged: Luclily the 18th did not Sustain as heavy charges from the Rebels as Some other Regiments and consequently their was not so great the 18th lost two Killed and about 20 wounded Co.C. lost one: man Killed (John.H.Shingles) and five wounded (viz) Wm Loucks, Joseph Ross, Jasper .N. [illegible], Elijah Frasier and David Caulkins: Caulkins and Frasier were wounded verry Slight and are both doing duty Caulkins [crossed out word] had the tip of his thumb Shot off and Frasier was creased with a ball across the hip; the Other three are more Seriously wounded but with care all will recover; Three Compainies ([illegible]) E.F. and I. were Stationed at a Bridge 2 miles South of Alatoona and were taken Prisoners: they will get their veteran furlough in a bad Shape: the Reg't will not probably Start until the transportation becomes again regulated which may be Several weeks Some of the boys think if they are not sent home soon they will not come back again as their old time is nearly out but I dont know how it will be arranged: but try and content myself as well as I can: the Sergt of my Squad and myself [crossed out word] have built us a snug little Shanty out of Lumber with two glass windows and fireplace and are very well prepared to Stand the winter if we Stay here I dont have mutch to do now as I am acting Bugler for the Pioneer Corps and the most of my work is blowing and I would now as soon stay here until my old time is out and be mustered out if they want we should Stay they cant Keep us longer than the 20th of January without sending us home any way: well my paper is about out and I must quit I Remain as Ever Yours T.Jefferson Davis To Mrs. Lucie M Davis
