No 14 Pioneer Corps 3rd Div 15th A.C. Cartersville Ga Oct 13th 1864 Dear Wife I sit down this morning to write you a few lines in answer to your letter No 12, dated Sept 25 & 28 which I rec,d last night and I was verry glad to hear from you and to hear that you was well for I had not Rec'd a letter from you for two or three weeks: I think there is yet two or three of your letters that are yet behind last night [crossed out word] [crossed out word] we rec'd the first mail we have had for over two weeks the R.R. is getting pretty well repaired again. but from appearence of present movements we will Soon Evacuate this [illegible] from Atlanta to Dalton Our troops have been going back past here towards Chattanooga Ever since day before yesterday morning and they are still going bye yet the 4th 23rd 14th 16th and 17th Army Corps have pased and the [crossed out word] 15th Corps will pass to day; we are under orders to be ready to march at any moment so we will probably follow up soon: the reason of such a move as near as I can learn is: that Richmond is taken and that Lee is marching part of his Richmond force into East Tenn with the intention of geting into our Rear and cut off our army but if they come in about Chattanooga or Knoxville they will get waked up good and Strong : the 20th A.C. is Still back at Atlanta: if Sherman does Evacuate the RR the 20 Corps will probably burn Atlanta and follow up in a few days and destroy the R.R. as they come we will how ever move about the movements in a few days We are now having verry pleasent weather we had a light frost day before yesterday morning and it is about cool enough for pleasent marching We came to this place three months ago yesterday and I have got tired enough of it now to go someplace else; all I regret is that we have to leave our comfortable little House: but then we can build another where we stop, again Ed Rogers hasn ot got verry stout yet and he has not yet Rec'd any letter from Elias: He thinks Elias is verry slow about writing: I dont hear any more talk of the Reg,t going home soon and it will soon be too cold for us to go So far North after being South so long; and many of the boys Seem verry indifferent about going home now: for all having orders to be Ready to march we may not leave here for a long time yet. So I never prepare to go until we have orders to pack Knapsacks If I had thought we would not went home before this time I Should like to had you Sent me your picture; but as we was looking to go soon I was a fraid that I would not get it I am glad that you got mine that I Sent you: After the drafted men leaves I think the Town of Harmony will be pretty well thinned of men – well Lucinda I will close for this time and write a few lines to to Marcia: Keep in good Spirits and dont get dicsouraged and do the best for yourself that you can perhaps there is better times coming. Write Often I Remain Ever faithfully Your T.J. Davis To .L.M.Davis
