On Board the Steamer Nightingale Off Troy Indiana Below Louisville: Jan'y 20th 1865 Dear Wife I Sit down to day to write you a few to let you Know where I am. We are now on our way to Savanah all of the Detachment of the 15th & 17th Army Corps are with us they came to Nashville two days before we left: we left Nashville on the 18th at noon we are on board a fleet of Steamers and will go up the Ohio River as far as Pittsburg unless we meet too mutch Ice but as yet we have found none but perhaps we will find Ice by the time we go to Cincinnati The weather is quite cool to Travel on the River it freezes considerably at night but it is more pleasent in the day time: but the farther we go up the Ohio River the colder it it will get until we get to Pittsburg we will take the cars at Pittsburg for New York and Steamers from there to Savanah it will take us five or Six days more for us to run to Pittsburg on these boats and the boys will be glad Enough to get off when we get through . I have not Recd a letter from you since I left Milwau though I have written quite a number to you . it must be that you did not Receive my letters I Expect I have been Directing them wrong you wrote for me to Direct to No 165 Porter Sv.. but I Supose you meant it for a t in Stead of a v. You should always write your Directions verry plain when you are in a Strange place to me. I will Direct this to 165 Porter Street as I Supose that is what you meant [crossed out] [wh] we will get back to Louisville to morrow morning it is five hundred miles from Nashville to Louisville by water Direct your next letter to New York with the Co and Reg't though I will probably not get any mail from you until we get to Savanah. those boys that we left were verry glad to get back to the Regt they were all fat tough and dirty Except Merick Rogers and Nat Shepard they were left at Louden Tenn Sick I Sent you two Rings in a letter from Chicago but I dont Know as you got them if you did not Inquire for letters Marked Lucinda M Davis No 165 Porter Sv.
