On board the Steamer Nightingale Sunday night 7 Oclock Jan 22/65 Dear Wife I will write a few lines to night as we are Steaming up the Ohio River between Madison Ind. and Cincinnati we are now within fifty miles of Cin' and if we run all night we will be there before daylight: we had to tie up last night on account of the fog and to night the river is thick with floating Ice but Still we are traveling with moderate good Speed. We left Louisville Yester day about 3'O'clock we would have been to Cinti before now if we had run all the time. I wrote you a letter day before yesterday and mailed it at Canelton Ind. I will probably mail this in Cinti tomorrow. we begin to see considerable snow on the River banks up her though it is not verry cold for it has been thawing yesterday and to day. we had considerable rain yesterday while coming through the locks in the Canal at Louisville. we have had a reasonable good trip So far for the time of year but it is rather too cold for comfort for so many on the boat. The 23rd A.C. is one day a head of us they come out of the Tenn River they are going to Grant the 23rd Corps and our Detatchment will [illegible] about 25000 men Enough to help the Eastern Army to a considerable Extent: we have not Rec'd any mail yet or at least I have not but some of the boys have had letters from home as late as the 10th before we left Nashville I will quit for to night and will write more tomorrow before I mail this: So Good Night T.J. Davis Cincnnati Ohio Monday morning Jan 23rd 1865 Well we are at the wharf at Cinti this morning and it is Snowing quite briskly the Ice is getting quite heavy in the River and we will probably go from here to New York by the Rail Road. but it may be several days before we get away from here as there is too may of us to all get Transportation immediately for I wish we was through ^ this is the wrong time of year for pleasure [illegible] in then north and it makes things Some what disagreeable where there is so many together; I have not been out in Town yet but I am going when I finish this letter but I dont feel mutch lilke getting on a drunk this morning.
