Baltimore Maryland Jan'y 31st 1865 Dear Lucinda I will write you a few lines this Evening to inform you that I am as well as usual and I hope this may find you well. We left Cin'ti on the 27th and arrived at Pittsburg Pa about 3.O clock on the 29th we were well Rec'd at at Pittsburgh and given a good Dinner by the Citizens Pittsburg is mutch of a Business City there being a great many Manufacturing Establishments there and the People Seem verry loyal. We left Pittsburgh at half past six O clock on the evening of the 29th and arrived here in Baltimore this morning at 4 O clock. Baltimore is a mutch nicer City than I Expected to find 'the Streets are Kept clean and the Buildings look neat the most of which are made of Brick Balimore is a larger City than Cincinnati containing over Two Hundred Thousand Inhabitants and it being a Sea port City its Commercial Business in times of peace have been verry considerable We come through Columbus Ohio and we Stoped there Several hours and I went out and took a look at the Capital Building which is a magnif State icent one 'it is the best ^ Capital Building in the U.S. We also came through Harrisburg the Capitol of Pa it is quite a nice Town but the State House is not So good as that of Ohio We found plenty of Snow all through Ohio and Pennsylvania but by the time we got here there was but little snow and to day being the warmest day we have had Since we left Nashville what little snow there was here most all melted off to day: To night we are in good Bar ricks at the west Edge of the City and we have orders to Start for Anapolis tomorrow morning at 8 O clock and there we will probably take Shiping for Savanah Ga. We did not go to N.Y. as we Expected We Expected to go to N.Y. until we got to Harrisburg Pa. there we Rec'd Orders to Report to Anapolis M.D. I have not Recd any letter from you yet nor I dont Expect until we get through it is a month ago to day Since I Rec'd a letter from you and I believe that is the longest I have been without one Since I been in the Service Except when I was at home with you then I did not care for letters Oh I must tell you: There has been consid erable talking about peace for the past few days: and to day we had a telegraph dispatch from Washington to the Affect that Jeff Davis had Sent Two peace commissioners to Washington and that they had got as far as Fortress Monroe The News in New York caused Gold to fall from 2,20 to 204 I dont want you to think that I believe that the war will be over in a week or two and that I will be at home for in the first place the news wants conformation, and the next place: if it is true: The comm issioners may want better terms than we will give them and go back without peace: But I Believe that peace is not far distant and that we can whip peace out of them in from three to six months But I will be glad as well as the whole country to see peace come as Early as possible and as McCawber Says we will wait patiently for something good to turn up. Well my paper is about out and I must quit for to night. I will write the Next oppertunity Direct. via. New York I remain Ever Your Obedient Husband Thos .J.Davis To Sis. | Kiss Silvie for me
