Co. C. 18th Regt. Wis. Vols. New Berne North Carolina Sunday Feb 19th 1865 Dear Wife This Sunday afternoon I Sit down to write you a few lines to let you Know that I am as well as usual and hopeing this may find you in good health: it has been a week ago to day Since I wrote to you and nothing of note has transpired in that time. We have not yet Rec'd any mail and the men are begining to grumble about it considerable for it Seems that there is Somebody to Blame Somewhere for we certainly ought to have had mail before this time. We have been at work the past week building Barrick for ourselves we built them of Small pine logs Each Building is 12 by 14 feet and calculated to contain 8 or 9 men we moved into them to day though they are not all fin ished yet from appearance it seems that we will probably remain here for sometime: this is rather a dismal looking country and a verry hard place to get news; we cannot get news from Sherman or Grant as quick as you can, But now the peace Excitement has about fizzled out and and Sherman and Grant will commence forceable negotiations in good Earnest and Keep them up until the Rebs will be glad to accept peace from the Northern Abolitionists: whom they affect So mutch to dispise: I am getting verry Anxious to hear from you for I dont Know as you get my letters for if you have gone to Marshall you will have to get them Remailed from Detroit I have not had a letter from any body Since I left Milwaukee and that is the longest that I have been without mail Since I have been in the service; But we will certainly get our mail arranged after a while So that we can get it. There is no Rebels in any force in this vicinity So we dont Expect mutch fighting while we stay here . The weather to day is pleasent we have some sunny days that have the appearnce of Spring and others again that are windy and cool and disagreeable to be out the boys that are here are all well Except E Frasier he is in the Hospital though he is not dangerous: Ed Rogers is quite hearty and he is the Dirtiest man in the Reg't___ and seems perfectly contented in being So. there is some talk that we will get paid before long though that is uncertain but I would be glad if we did for I have considerable many debts Standing out in the Reg't I will not write a long letter until I hear from you: So be a good Girl and I will write again I Remain Your Ever affectionate Husband Thomas J.
