Davis writes to Lucinda noting that they have still received no mail. He details that the barracks have been completed and that his sleeps nine men including himself. He continues by noting that several Rebel deserters have entered their lines and that they have received official news that General Sherman has taken Charleston and Columbia, South Carolina. Davis writes in detail about the Rebel struggle and how they have appealed to God and the African Americans for help. Davis notes that he expects to stay in the army until the war is over, although he believes it will be concluded by the fall. Davis informs Lucinda that she must explain to Susan and Harriet that they must write back to him before he writes to them again.
