C. 18 Regt Wis Div..... Army Corps Kinston March 23rd 1865 Dear Wife I Sit myself down this afternoon to write you a few lines to inform you how I am and where I am Well. I am in the Hospital at Kinston N.C. I was left here on the 19th because I had the Rheumatism So that I was not able to Keep up with the Reg't on the march: but I am considerable better now so that I am runing around considerably and will probably follow the Reg't in a few days: the Reg't has gone on out towards Goldsboro which is 29 miles west of here: I understand that Our forces from New Berne are Join ing with Sherman near Goldboro part of Shermans Wagon Trains is now here after Supplies Our Col (Jackson) is here in Town he Just came from New York he is in Command of Seventeen hundred recruits and will take charge of Shermans Wagons for Goldsboro in a day or two I dont Know but what I will go with him when he leaves here: I have been around town con Siderably yesterday and to day: and I find Some folks: that I really pitty their condition Some of them Seem to begood honest Sort of people and Say they were always opposed to the war although many were forced into it: many poor people are reduced to poverty and no way to make a living: Those rich Rebels that have been broken up I cannot cympathise with at all and I like to see them brought to beggery and I would assist in the work if necessary The weather is quite pleasent to day though the wind blows somewhat disagreeable: the peach trees are out in full bloom and the appearence is verry mutch Spring like: I Recd a letter from you the 19th dated the 8th inst I was verry glad to hear from you and to hear that you was well but sorry that you had not recd my letters lately: but I think before this time you have Rec'd letters from me informing you that I have gegun to Receive your letters .
