Pioneer Corps 3rd Div. 15th A.C. Raleigh North Carolina April 16th/65 dear Wife Another week has passed and gone and another Sunday has come which finds me Seated in my tent trying to pen you a few lines to let you Know that I am in tolerable health and truly hoping this may find you well. This morning finds us in the Rebel State Capitol of North Carolina which last Sunday was Seeming held in comparative Security by the Rebel General Johnson and his forces: we left Goldsboro last monday morning and moved Raleigh wards in three colums Our Corps being on the extreme right wing We came upon the Rebel advance Cavalry about ten miles west of Goldsboro which we drove in front of us with but little resistance and on thursday morning as our Colums came in front of Raleigh from the East. the Rebels left the City verry hastily to the westward: We now have Official information That Lee has Surrendered the whole of his Virginia Army to Gen Grant: and yesterday Gen Jo Johnson Surrendered his forces to Gen Sherman : We sent Several wagons laden with rations to the Rebels yesterday afternoon and they (the Rebels) will probably be marched in here this evening or tomorrow and paroled according to Stipulations of Surrender. The news of Johnson's Surrender went through the camps of the Divisions and [illegible] like wild fire and you may immagin that [illegible] caused great Excitement and rejoicing throughout the Army and every body was anxious to learn the peticulars of the latest clothes line Dispatches from the front; but we have not heard the peticulars yet: but we will get them this afternoon or tomorrow as Sherman with an Escort and a number of other Officers are out with Johnson (now So the news is glorious and the future is bright and Encouraging mutch more has been accomplished than I had reason to hope for this early: three months ago: I think the Rebellion is virtually at an end for after the capture of Lee's and Johnsons Armies I dont think they will be foolish enough to attempt to fight farther I think I have seen my last battle in this war When this news Shall be fully Known it will make many glad hearts both North and South and a general National rejoicing In the mien time we must wait patiently to see what the next few weeks will bring forth yet Although I believe the war is about over ^ You must not look for me home on every train for even when the war is over it may months before we are all discharged Well enough War news for this time I have not rec'd any letter from you since I last wrote for we have rec'd no mail. You must Excuse a hastily written letter for I am in a hurry this morning as the mail goes out at 7 Oclock Please to write Often Direct to Raleigh N.C.
