Alexandria Virginia May 22nd 1865 Dear Wife I Sit down this evening to write you a few lines to let you Know that I am as well as usual truly hoping this may find you and the little one in good health I Rec'd a letter from you last night dated at Marshall April 26th and at the same time I rec'd a letter from Sarah Kennedy that you wrote a few lines in.. that is the first mail I have rec'd from you Since I left Raleigh: the last letter I rec'd from you: at Raleigh; was dated April 10th in which you wrote for me to send my letters to Hockley: which I have since done: in your last you wrote that you was going home with Sarah McLain and visit a week and then go home: Robert Mc Rec'd a letter from his wife this morning dated May 12th but She did not write that you had arrived at home We can get mail here verry quick for there is R.R. from here to all parts of the North I shall look for a letter from you tomorrow: with your Photograph that you Spoke of I recd Sylvies picture you Sent me I think it looks verry mutch like her and is as good as I expected you could get unless you can Keep her more quiet than we could at Galesburg: I rec'd a letter from D. Ingersoll and his wife dated April 18th Dave has Sold out and bought a farm Six miles north of where he lived when we was there his Post Office is now at Iona Warren Co Ill: The 1st Wis H.A. is Stationed here at Alexandria I Saw Tom Barkes; Jim [Written upside down on top of Page 2] Direct to Co C 18th Regt Wis Vols Washington D.C. Adams: Parker Briswell and Several other Badax men: to day: that I was not acquainted with We are within four miles of Washington City and we can see the Capital Building verry plainly We (Shermans army) will March into Washington day after tomorrow on Review: The army of the Potomac and Sheridans command will be Reviewed tomorrow. Washington City AC. May 26th 1865 Well Lucinda after So long a time I will finish my letter when I commenced this we were so busy that I had not time to mail it So I thought I would wait until after the Review and also wait for another letter from you: but no letter has yet come: Robert Mc Rec'd a letter from home dated May 12th but She did not mention whether or not you had got home I wrote to you about two weeks before we left Raleigh for you to Send my letters to the Reg't but I have not had one come to the Regt yet: perhaps you did not get the letter: Will Cleary rec'd a letter from Mary dated 17th inst So you See that my letters are behind hand considerably I intended to have wrote you the peticulars of the Grand Review at the National Capitol [crossed out] [on] that come off on the 23rd & 24th inst but not attempt it to day I will however Send you a Washington paper that has the peticulars in it: We are Encamped 2 miles North of the City on verry nice groud: I have visited the Capitol: The President's Mansion or White House and Fords Theatre where the President was assassinated: there was more People in Washington last Tuesday and Wednesday than were ever present at one time before in the City Well my paper is out and I must close Write soon yours as Ever T.J.
