June 2nd 1865 Dear Wife I will attempt this afternon to write you a Short Epistle in answer to your to your letter Dated May 25 which I rec'd on the 31st which [crossed out] [is the quickest] came the quickest of any letter I have rec'd from you for a long time ; it does not take long for mail to go from here to Wis: My health is as good as usual and I feel considerable better after recruiting up from our long March. Well we are Still encamped near the the Capitol City and where we can get news fresh from the War [illegible] every morning . I have been nearly all over the City and have Seen agreat things that I have wished to see for a long time. I have visited the Capitol the Patent Office: the Treasury Department the Washington monument Gen. Taylors Residince: and the White House: or the Presidents Mansion. and also Fords Theatre where President Lincoln ws Assassinated: Yesterday was the day of fasting and Prayer and the City wore a verry Solemn appearence: as nearly all the Business houses were closed and all the public and most of the Private Buildings were Draped in mourning: You said in your letter that you heard that Shermans army was coming home and you would not send your picture until I come home. You must not look for me too soon: it may Several months before I get home: but I have no Idea of staying until my time is out. We will leave here tomorrow for Louisville K.Y. Where we will go we into camp and ^ will be mustered out and Sent home from there: when our time comes: but we will have to wait patiently until they get to us I will Send you a couple of Washington papers that will give you more news than I can write You are certainly not more anxious to see me come home than I am to come; but it will not hurry the matter one minute to be impatient about it So I mean to be Just as careless about it as possible for I think I will get home before a great while: And then we will begin to think of living like married folks for the first time: and as you say I think that we both may have profited by being Seperated So long and I will I think here after ^ appreciate a good home: a gentle Spirited; kind and Loving Wife: better now than I otherwise would and I see no reason why we should not Enjoy our selves as well as any other folks in the world if fortune favor's us with a comfortable living and good health all the men in our Reg't that their time Expires before the 1st of Oct next were Mustered out of Service day before yesterday but they have not been paid nor have not yet started home for they cannot get Transportation yet When you Write again Direct your letter to Co C.. 18th Regt Wis Vols. 2nd Brig 4th Div 15th A.C.
