Coshockton Ohio July 16th 1865 Dear Wife I will attempt this wet Sunday afternoon to Write you a few lines to let you Know that I am Still in the land of the living and have not forgotten you. I Expect you begin to feel uneasy about me by this time as I have not written to you Since the 21st of last month . I left Cincinnati the next day after I wrote to you and went to Washington City Perhaps you will wish to Know what I went to Washington for. Well I will tell you: in the first place I believed that on account of my health I was entitled to a discharge from the Military service I made application to our Doctor for an Examination and he refused to pay any attention to me. in the 2nd place the Col about the Same time put me under arrest without any cause and had me on Extra duty for Several days I then determined to go to Washington myself and See the President and See if there was no way that I could get a medical Examination. So I went to Washington and remained there about two weeks but the President remained in his room Sick and I could not get to See him: So I have got this far back and I have not yet made up my mind whether I will return to the Regt or not for if I Should go back now I would probably be court martialed and mustered out without any more pay and another thing I never wish to See our Doctor or Col while they are officers in the Army I am not afraid of any punishment they may inflict on me but I will never be a Military dog in time of peace to come at the whistling of a few bigoted despots who have more impudence than common Sense and who are to humanity a Stranger. Probably I have did a rash act but I am too Sensative to bear abuse for nothing I have not made up my mind what I will do if I do not go back to the Regt I will probably be home by the first of Sept : I will write to you again in course of a week: in the mean time you need not be uneasy about me I Remain as ever your affectionate Husband As Ever To L M Davis T.J.
