Chamber (presumably a cousin of Jefferson) writes about his conditions in the army. He is stationed in Arkansas where the hot weather and insects are making life uncomfortable. Chamber is looking forward to the end of his term of service in eight weeks, because he is "utterly disgusted with our treatment in this department." He also notes that many of those in his regiment are suffering and dying from illness.
