Jefferson tells his father that he is owed four months of pay and that he is almost halfway through his term of service. Relaying messages from Dr. Gore in the Dakota Territory, Jefferson notes that the territory has good land for farming and grazing, but a lack of timber and "hostilities with the Indians" are preventing people from settling.
