March 30th /64 Dear wife I now seat myself to write a fiew lines to you to let you know that i am well at present and hope when this reaches you it will find you enjoying the same blessing we have had some cold weather since i came here but it is a getting some warmer now we have to drill very day in the forenoon and in the afternoon and the officers has to drill in the morning about one hour. but the colonel is gone away now there will be some big times here i expect Sam Shaw and lem is tight nearly all the time sam has been in the guard house twenty four hours allready and lem has not been in camp since night before last and i dont know when he will get back. but the provost guard fetched fourteen from town to the guard house this morning which will be court martialed now soon. lem is detailed to go in the band but if he does not behave himself a little better he will lose his place there, they have just got their instruments m and want to com^ence to practice and if he does not stay in camp they will get some one in his place. i have sent two papers to you and have two more to send and i want you to keep them and put them in a book one of our boys takes them and he said if i would send them all home he would give them to me after he read them and i told him i would, he says he is comming up there sometime and wants to read them and think over old times Apr 2nd 1864 I will now try and finish my letter since the company have gone out to drill it would be quite i sight to see the soldiers here when they are out drilling for you can see about three thousand all at one time, sam got punished when he came back to camp he had to carry a stick of wood twelve hours out of twenty four and two more of the boys of our company was served the same way, i have been on guard twice since i came back here they do not put the new recruits on guard much but they have to drill, the captain did not say a word to me because i did not come back any sooner there there is some of the boys that have not got here yet and i guess they do not expect to come back again it is nice weather here now the spring birds are singing and the frogs make a great noise at night. now i must close for my paper is not ruled on this side write as soon as you recieve this give my respects to all inquiring friends from your affectionate husband Wm.
