Carrollton Lea April 11th 1864 Dear Wife I now seat myself to write a few lines to you in answer to yours of the 31st of last month which has just come to hand to night it found us all well as we could expect we are more healthy here than we was in Arkansas but we will not be here many days longer now for half of the regiment have got their tents down now to leave tomorrow we are going to cross the lake as fast as we can get transportation there had been some of our company taken to the hospital since we came here but it was those that have been sick for a long time and are not able to ride. but i hope when this reaches you it will find you all enjoying good health in greenbush. we have been down to the city to day the whole regiment marched all through the town and then we came back to camp We had some good news last night we heard that the whole of lee’s army was captured and that mobile was evacuated and there was a salute fired about nine oclock in the Evening. and i never saw the boys feel as well as they did last night they was all talking about going home and i think that there is a fair prospect of our getting home this summer sometine. i do not think that we will ever see any fighting any more. for before we get over to Mobile i think that that the fighting will all be over with and it may be that peace will be declared and if it is we will go around by New York home. I have sent two or three new Orleans papers to you but i dont know as they will get through but if they dont it will be no great loss i just sent them so that you could see what was going on here we get our mail regular here now it comes about three times a week Sam Shaw is in here talking over old times and i can hardly write he has so many yarns to tell. jack page was in my tent to night and he told me not to write any more than i knew and i told him that i would not so i guess i will have to stop soon john and steve are [two lines illegible in original] We are going to turn over all of our tents here and I dont know wether we will get anymore before we leave here or not. it is very hot weather here now every thing looks green.
