Winter st Barracks st Louis Mo May 14th 1864 Dear Em I now seat my self to write a fiew lines to you as i recieved a letter from you this forenoon it found us all well and i hope when this reaches you it may find you all enjoying the same great blessing, from what i can learn i think it is more sickly there than it is here in the army we are a moving camp to day we are moving back to camp davidson and i am glad of it for i want to get out of the city but i dont like to go in tents again but i guess we can stand it, i told jim about Ellen he says he dont care a dam for there is some out to grass lake that he can write to that is better than she is and i guess there is i am on guard to day at the military prison i stand right among the sesesh and some of them feels considerable down to hear what our army is doing in virginia, abe he thinks it would be a quite a treat to be a prisoner if he could fare as well as they do here but i think i had rather stay in our own army as long as i can and if it is my luck to be taken prisoner i will have to do the best i can, Hi steffy got back yesterday but he was not in greenbush while he was there, you spoke about sending some tea here to me but you need not for we have tea or coffee every meal, and you need not send me any socks for i have three pair here now one pair that i never have had on yet, our band is improving very fast they have got a leader from michigan they pay him seventy five dollars per month and they all have bought them a coat that cost them twenty six dollars and they look very nice they are all trimed with silver braid there is fourteen men in the band three of them is from our company, i found a man in our company that knows that song that you sent to me it s a very good song, the mississippi valley sanitary fair commenced Monday they have to keep a very strong guard around the ground it is agoing to be a nice thing some of our boys are at work there every day a helping to trim it with evergreens it is agoing to be a big thing i should like to be there to cook some cabbage for [illegible in original] i reckon but i cant get there yet a while but i shall come as soon as i can i guess if i dont miss it now i will close, i have sent one of my pictures to [lois?] and i will send one more to you, and your i will return but i dont like to let it go, you must take good care of your self and not get sick, good bye for this time write as soon as you get his from your affectionate husband Wm Eaegle E.A.
