(Baton Rouge La (May 24th 1865 Dear wife I now will seat myself to pen a fiew lines to you to let you know that we have got through here all safe and we are all well at this time and i hope when this reaches you it will find you enjoying the same good health. we started from mobile on the eight of this month and we got here on the 22nd and we were about all tired out for we had to live on half rations nearly all the way through. we had to put down a pontoon Bridge nine times on the road and we were not allowed to forage on the country a bit only when we could steal out and get sonething to eat and not get catched at it we was not bothered with any rebels on our route it seemed almost like peaceable times to see the rebels soldiers at home at work on their farms. and if the army west of the Mississippi will surrender. i think we will get home before a great while. and if they dont we will have to go to texas just as soon as we can get ready. and that will be some two or three weeks. for nearly all of our horses wants shoeing before we can go. [dozens?] folks have got that box of things that we sent from Brownsville and the charges was six dollars and thirty cents. and i will settle here with [dozen?] as soon as we get our pay. and i dont know when that will be. We are camped about one mile from town out in an open field in the hot sun with out any tents. but we will get our tents to day they are drawing them up fron the boat this morning. there was a man shot himself on our march while he was cleaning his gun but he was very careless but he did not know that there was any lead in his gun. he got shot through his left shoulder and we left him at a house in Osyka and left a man with him he belonged to Co “A” he was a new recruit but i dont think his wound would be dangerous if the weather was not so hot but i should not like to have it on me and then be left among strangers but he may have the best kind of care for all that i know but he is better off there than he would have been to brought him along with us for he would have bleed to death before we got through Our Colonel has got back to the regiment since we have came here you must write as soon as you get this and as often as you can you must excuse poor writing for i have a bad place to write and a very poor pen give my respects to all no more at present but remain your loving husband Wm.
