(San Antonio Texas (Sep 14th 1865 Dear wife I will now seat my self to write a fiew lines to you again. it has been a long time since i have wrote to any one. i am well at present and i hope when this reaches you it will find you in good health we have not had any mail since we left shreveport which is over two months but they say that we will get our mail tomorrow or next day and i hope it is so for i want to hear from home the worst kind I was going to write to you the first of this month but we was ordered out with fifteen days rations so i did not get a chance to write until i came into camp. we went to Escort Gen Sheridan to Eagle pass on the Rio Grande there was three hundred of our regiment went and when we got within fifty miles he took one hundred men and went through it is the most barren country that i have ever seen there is no timber nor anything else only muskeet brush. part of the company have been over into mexico but i did not go out there my horses feet got sore so i had to wait until Gen came back. there is no settlements of any amount in the whole route There was one of our company died a fiew days ago his name was David Soules of Essex. There has been one man shot by citizens he belonged to Co "I" they got his revolver. but did not get his horses nor his money there is one thousand dollars reward offered for the capture of the man that shot him. there is a good prospect of of our getting home before long and if the regiment cones home together i will let you know when we will be in detroit but if we are discharged down here we get home a great deal quicker. and i will not have time to let you know what day i would be there Abe Brewbaker and sam shaw are going to be discharged they are at new Orleans they will get home about as soon as you will get this letter now i will close for this time you must write as often as you can no more at present but remain your affectionate husband Wm Eaegle E.A.E.
