Camp Griffin [illegible letter] Va February 27th 62 Dear cousin Em & I now sit down to answer your letter which I received the 25 and was verry glad to here from you and hear that you was well I am well at present and hope this will find you the same I should have answered your letter before [crossed out] [fi] but I have been on picket and when I came off I had to [crossed out] [pv] fix my tent [crossed out letter] and then the orders came to pack up our knapsacks and [have?] three [crossed out word] days rations in our [haversack?] and be ready to march at a moment morning I expect to hear the [long?] roll every moment but I hope not until I get this letter wrote It is a verry windy morning and pretty cold but not verry I have to stay in my tent without any fire and you will have to excuse my for not writing better but my fingers are so cold I cant hardly write I will tell you a little about our [crossed out] [f] fair the other day February the 24th was was a very windy day it [crossed out letter] blew our tents all down and blew all night so we couldent [crossed out] [fix] fix it that night so I and my tent mates took our blankets and went to the woods and built up a fire and stayed all night and it was the coldest night I have been since I left home. The 25th I went on picket and stayed twenty four hours and came in yesterday morning and had to go to work and fix our tent and so you see I couldent [crossed out] [fi] write until to day I should like to see you verry much and see all of the rest of the folks Emeline I shall have to stop [crossed out word] writing for I cant write so you can read it I guess if you can read this you will do well I got a letter from one of my [cousins?] in York state she wrote she and all of the folk up thare was well I will tell you her name if you would like to know it Miss Mary M. Dennis I got a letter this morning from Jane this morning she was [crossed out letter] well and of her folks I should like to see You all but I dont know as I ever shall but I hope that I may live [crossed out] [and] [crossed out letter] through the war and come safe home but perhaps I may never see my home again you know that all of the soldiers cant come back to their homes Em tell [crossed out] [will ard] Willard to write as often as he can tell him to excuse me for not writing sooner I will do better next time this is all this time so good by From..George W.
