Em A Daggett [Penciled in] [1863?] Stafford CO Va April the 21/1863 Dear Cousin Em I will now write once more to let you know of my health which is good at present and hope this may find you all enjoying the same great blessing I wrote you a long time ago but have never received any answer but I dont know as that makes aney difference. I dont know whether my letter got miscarried or whether you have forgotten me if you have forgotten me this will bring me to your memory if you get it our regiment are getting pay to day we expect to march for some place before long and God onely knows whare we have had eight days rations dealt out to us go and have got to cary the same when we ^ I received a letter from Prudence also one from Jane not long since the was all well thare then I believe some of our friends in York State are sick [crossed out word] uncle Ephraim Dennis wife also one of his boys are very sick Granmother Dennis is dead she Died the 18 of this month Father and family are well I havent heard from Reuben since you write me last. we are having good time down here in Dixie now but probably they wont last long or at least I think not for when we get started on a march with eight days rations on our backs with the rest of our [illegible] it wont be very nice business I guess but thirty days after to day and then my time will be out and then I shall retire to civil life although soldiering pays pretty well –Greenbacks are a plenty here to day as chips in a chip [yard?] I shall go home when my time is out and see the folks and then if I feel it my duty to enlist again I shall come back to the army Soldiering is not so bad as some men tries to make out although a soldier sees some pretty hard times he has to endure some privations and hardships but a true lover of his country can endure a great deal to restor the union and save the old flag Well I guess if you can read this you will have a long job so I will close Except this from your cousin G.
