Willard writes to his sister Emma about his hopes of receiving a month's worth of back pay so that he can send some of the money home. In an additional entry for November 16, Willard notes that he has been paid and will send home twenty-five dollars. He mentions that the commanding officers are not grantng any furloughs, so he will not be able to visit home in the foreseeable future.
