Camp on Stone River Tennessee Sunday November 23d 1862. Dear Mother, with feelings of grateful pleasure I take my pen to acknowledge the receipt of your kind & welcome letter of the 16th your letter found me about as usual and what I call well. sometimes I think I am perfectly well. but I have not been as tough since I was sick in June. as I was before. I have a considerable pains in my sides. & breast. I also have a slight cough. most of the time. Solduring is must to hard for me. but I hope that I shall be able to stand it until this cruel war is over. When we get our pay I am going to get me some shoulder braces. which will help me I think. the climate here is good. and I think agrees withe me better then Michigan. d I rea^ a letter from augustus the other day dated Oct 29th through him I learned nearly all the news I am glad Father had gone to the [Asylum?] & hope he returns well. am sorry that Augustus Enlisted for he is to young to stand it. we have to many such Soldiers already. we want good [strict?] men. I was not surprised to hear Frank had gone & hope he will return again. I wrote a letter to him. also to Alvah the other day. I do not understand why you have not heard from me. for I have written several times since communcation was opened. which has been about two weeks. probably by this time you have heard from me. You did not say whether Freddie goes to school or not. I hope he does. & it is my wish that he should go all the Time. Tell him he must be a good boy. mind his mother. & to write to me. tell me what he studies & how far he is in them to I wrote to Uncle Harrison the other day to find out about that debt of Fathers. as I intend to pay part of it this fall. or as soon as we get our pay. Please write me how Mrs White gets along paying the rent. I should off think she would be well enough ^ now as M W-- is Lieutenant. I wish you would write me a good long letter. write all the news for I am anxious to hear of all that happens. but for this time I will close by writing a word to Sarah. Good Bye Yours affectionately Edwin Holmes
