Camp near Corinth Sunday Oct 19th 1862. My Dearly Loved Emma When I wrote you before it was from this camp. I had Just returned from my Van chase after Price ^ Dorn [illegible in original]. I then felt very unwell, yet Considering it my duty to write a short letter to her whom I loved dearer than any other Humane Being – Dearer than life itself before I slept or rested. How glad I was next morning that I had written to my Darling Emma. for I was taken sick with the “Dum Ague” during the night. brought on by my exposure while after Price. Had I not been sick dearest. I would have written to you, before now. Today I am feeling very well &. guess I shall come out finally alright. Oh! Dear Dear Emma. Could your dear hand have rested up- on my feverish brow. how happy happy would I have been. What a comfort a true fond &. sincere loving Bride. like my Emma would have been to me. But no she was far away. &. Mark could only think of _ and love her. Your picture was &. is constantly beside me. In my sleep. You were constantly in my dreams _ and the Boys say I spoke occasionally of one Emma &. in terms of affection. If I did speak in that manner _ dearest it was the true language of my heart. Tis Sunday afternoon a warm day _ and makes me think of the last sunday I passed in Chickaming Oh! What a happy happy evening What precious moments _ How rapidly they passed _ and at length the moments for parting had arrived. Oh! Emma it did seem to me that I could not leave you. It seemed too hard to be compelled to part with her whom I had Just learned to love so deeply. Frank Goodwin is quite sick. He has been ordered to the Gen. Hospital _ we fear he has the Typhoid Fever _ and if he has _ He never will recover. Yet every care which money will buy he has: Our Boys visit him every day &. stay as long as they can. The Army is a poor place for sick men. May God grant _ we may all return in Peace soon to friends & “Loved Ones” _ but not until this wicked Rebellion has been shipped out. We have cleared them out of this Country pretty Effectually They dont want to attack Corinth again I am thinking. The newes from Kentucky is good. If the Army of the Potomack will only do as well as the Western Troops have done we may Expect to see the Rebellion Knocked higher than “Hay- man” before the spring of 1863. Since I wrote before I have heard nothing from my friends in Minnesota. My Darling Emma I am yet quite week &. must close this. I shall look for another letter from you soon. please excuse brevity etc. etc. Write long letters dearest From your own Mark P.S. I would finish this page if I were not so tired. as it is you will excuse it _ My own fond Girl. wont you? Take good care of your health dearest. Go to Parties _ and enjoy your- self as much as you can. I would give any thing to see you to day. When we do meet. beware of many many Kisse's. Oh! You alone can imagin my Love – It is true true &. deep You are dearer than all the Treasures of this world smelted into one solid gem _ Dearer to me than my every thing else _ Do not doubt me. I am Yours Forever Mark Give my love to your Mother
