This document is Sergeant Edwin Havens' discharge paper from the Michigan Cavalry, which he had joined in 1862. At the time of his discharge from service, Havens was serving at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas. The reverse of the document is Havens' "Oath of Identity", swearing he is "the identical Edwin R. Havens."
