Nankin Jan. 1.st 1861. Tuesday. I am boarding [?] at William Drekison’s There is snow enough for possible sleighing but the weather is mild As it is New Years I am unemployed as usual I caught a very nice Turkey today; a nice mate to the one I caught yesterday. We are having a New Years dinner here today & a nice turkey with it Father, Luther & family, Uncle Lyman & wife Vail & wife & Oscar & Louise were here. Mary Litchfield, who is teaching school on the Pike is here. Eb Bennett’s sister and Suciu [continued in margin: not here] In the evening I attended a party at Uncle Marcus [illegible in original] where I had a very nice time. I left however before the party was out and dont know how it [illegible in original-maybe ended?] Through some mishap I it was quite a late hour before I retired Fathers health is quite poor. Martha has the St. Vitus Dance very bad Nankin Wednesday Jan 2 1861 I aroise at the usual hours. After breakfast I went over to the shop where Dickerson and I am making bobbs, Imediatily after I builded a fire Henry came along and I went with him to the County House, where I staid until after noon I took dinner there The commissioners were in session After dinner we went around & saw the inmates I rode from there with Dr. Morrison We went to Mrs. Stringers and then to home. In eveng I went [illegible in original] the which acquired and formed a spelery school. Nankin Thursday Jan 3, 1861 I worked in shop The weather is mild and has the appearance [illegible text in margin] of snow. There is a prayer meeting this evng but I do not attend as I am writing I Receved two books of P C Loch tonight and a Letter from Helen Nankin Friday Jan. 4. 1861. I worked in shop all day on bobbs During the day I went to Shephards & Edgars. Father is much afflicted in his shoulder. I very much fear he will be clear down with it. I have had Neuralgia quite hard today I caught another Turkey today In evening I attended a turkey cut at Uncle Daniel’s where I had a very good time; there was some thirty persons present [illegible in original] brats[?] After the table was cleared away we took a sleighride Carnclier [?] went as far as the Burgh and then went in search of [illegible in original] Beaher[?] was along Saturdy Jan 5 1861 I worked in shop on bobbs The wether mild and it is very queer[?] slushy[?]. Luther worked for me today There is an increased interest in the Secession movement Nankin Sunday Jan 6 1861 In forenoon I attended Church Bro Haverne preached from the 16 verse to 6th tenth chapter of the Episte of James There has been a little rain today & it is very slipery The one week prayer Meeting commences tonight Subs captain for the support of the musters was circulated today and I syned 2 [illegible in original] Cahoun meeting in after noon but I did not attend Nett & I went up to Bessers & Besser had gone to singing school & we came Home. I paid 25 cts for building fires at Church I was reading Prince of the House of David and other men go to church in evening. Nankin Monday Jan 7 1861 It has been raining during the Night & the snow is fast going I corded wood part of 1 ½ cords & then I went to Pikes Peak. I took dinner at Fathers after which I helped Luther load up a load of apples for Detroit Ed brought over some brooms and then [illegible in original] not to go I dont go to church tonight for I expect to start for the city Early in morning Nankin Tuesday Jan. 8. 1861 At 6 O.C. A.M. I started for Detroit with a load of Apples for Luther It is an awful icy time so much so that it is actualy dangerous to be on the road with a load I saw Mr. Chase when going down and promised to send him one half dozen brooms. I sold my load of apples very readily after I got there at 33 cts pr Bushel I sold to a Runner for Davison and unloaded them under Michigan Exchange I then left a Box Apple seeds at the M.S. & N.I.R.R. for E. H. Reynolds Monroe The river is not frozen one. I could not sell the brooms that I took for Ed I stored them at Beardsley I had my picture taken and paid $2.oe. I bought a barrel of salt for Henry at 13/- I came out as far as Chases and stayed all night faired[?] folks all well Nankin Wednesday Jan 9 1861 I staid at Chases over night & this morning I took breakfast & started for home. I stoped at Bill Coopers and bogught two sleigh tongues for Bobbs’ In afternoon I worked for E.B. Osborne on bobbs. In eveng I attended church Elder Crane preached a short sermon & then dismissed After reading I went and arrived home in good sun Nankin Thursday Jan 10 1861 I worked on bobb all day almost. Henry Zimmerman split wood for me today. I read the Geresners[?] Message and it is all right Luther has gone to Northville with Martha to see Dr. Swift. She is better & prospects are good for her recovery. I did all the chores for Luther tonight Louise is staying with Net tonight We went to church in evening. Crane Uncle Marcus & Almstead was there Nankin January 11 1861 Friday It commenced to snow sometime last night and now at 6 OC P.M. is is still snowing. I worked on bobbs today. General Scott has been appointed secretary of War and bids fair to quell the disturbance intended by the secessionists I received a letter today from Milton C Glas. He is now living in Grand Rapids & Has a job chopping[?] Fellow S.C. Harris has lately been appointed Deputy Sheriff. A poor appointment I think Thomas Shairs has mooved from Ypsilanti back to the burgh and rented the old machine shop of Uncle Abe & expects to get rich but I think he will not pay his way. Lyman Felter [illegible in original] is doing a job ofen fencing[?] for Dickersen Nankin Saturday Jan. 12. 1861. I went to Fathers in the morning and read Wisners Message. I then went to Henrys. He is out south driving wood to Wayne. Fred Sims is working for him & is sick with the Ague. I then went to Edgars & staid a while. I went to Shepherds but bought nothing. I then went to Eds and troook dinner. I taked with him about the idea of taking the old farm. I made two brooms one of which I brought home and gave to Olive[?] Dickersen I went with David Whitticer to the waists out south after a load of hay. I evening Eb Bennett & Ramsey came here from Cabville. We all went to meeting. Bennett with Ramsey in the sleigh & Eb & I on foot. Bro Almstead preached. Eb put his horse out and staid with Nett and Ramsy staid with me Nankin Sunday Jan 13 1861 Eb Bennett and Ramsey left here this morning before breakfast Net & I went to Church in forenoon. Uncle Marcus preached. After meeting the Choir staid and sung a while Nett rode home with Uncle Daniel Louise stoped at our house and staid until Rammsey came after Nett to go home. I wrote a letter to Sister Helen & Milton Glas. after which I went up to Uncle Daniel’s. Reubin Wight’s folks were there. I did not go to meeting in the evening… Lute Irish came home with Luther and staid a while I guess. Just[?] know Read some letters of Louises Nankin Monday Jan 14 1861 In morning I went to Fathers and then went with Henry to get some wood for the church Henry sold some 3’12 wood for 6/- pr cord Luther is sick & I have to do his chores. I went to meeting in evening. Mary Peck came school at Wallaces today Nankin Tuesday Jan 15 1861 I staid at Fathers last night, & did the chores agen this morning. Luther is some better. We loaded up a load of Green[illegible in original] for Detroit I expect to go with them tomorrow Bro Almstead was at our house [illegible in original] talking about religion It has been raining all day I did not go to meeting this evng as I am not well and expect to go to Detroit early in the morn Wednesday Nankin [crossed out] [Tuesday] Jan 16 1861 I started for Detroit after day light Ed went with me with some brooms. It stormed very hard before we got into the city I sold my load of Apples for 33cts pr bushel. Ed sold brooms for 12/-10/-9/ & 8/- pr doz. I saw Ben Durfee, Mary is sick and has been all winter I got home between ten or eleven John B Gough was to Lecture tonight in Detroit Nankin Thursday Jan.17.1861 I did the chores for Luther & then helped Ed kill his cow After noon I loaded a load of apples for the City. There is a party at Day Decins[?] tonight but I dont go as I am not well and would go to meeting if any where. I did go to meeting after all. Father Crane preached Nankin Friday Jan.18.1861 I arose 3 ½ O.C. & commenced preparation for the City. Henry came over & then thought he would not go to ou city on acc^nt of meeting I started at 6 & get into the City at 9 O.C. A.M. It snowed like mad on the way which made the sleghing better It rained while in Detroit I sold Apples Rembo 32cs Spitz 35cs- Beleflower 40cts pr Bushel Took Beef for Ed & sold at 3 ¾ pr lb Beef skin at 4 ½. I bought a Buffalo Robe for Father for $7.50 Milton Glas came home from Grand Rapids last night It was awful Cold & rainy coming home. I came home by Haggardy’s up through Greenfield Nankin Saturday Jan 19 1861 I did Luthers chors as he has a bad swelling in his face H He paid me $10. In forenoon I mailed a paper to Uncle Durfee Osband & tried to get my boots mended. I wrote a letter to Melvin and [illegible in original] $10 in the same. I attended church in morning. Bro Almstead preached. I went up to Uncle Daniel’s with Milton to have a sing[?] but [illegible in original] & Isaiah was there & I did not go in Louise & I went over to Mat’s I went to church in Evng. Uncle Marcus preached a good discourse. Meetings are very interesting now Monday Jan 21 1861 Nankin I staid at Dick’s last night This morning I came over home & did the chors & then cleaned up some wheat & went to mill In afternoon I touok my boots to have them fixed & went to meeting I also went to meeting in Evening when bro Crane preached one of his best discourses Nankin Tuesday Jan 22 1861 I did the chores in morning & then went to mill & to get the horses shod Betsy went to Stringers after which I went to the Pike with Louise. Louise went to Mollie’s school & I went to Moulin Rouge [?]. We took supper at Underwoods Social at Walkers but could not stay. saw Mollie and had a good chat with her. Came home in eveng. Nankin Wedesday Jan 23 I was very much under the weather & did nothing but the chores all day. Did not go to church because could not sit down. Saw Mary Marshall. She rode with me. I got a bottle of medicine for Martha & an invitation to John’s Birthday Party Came home & rabbit Hunting No meeting tonight Nankin Sunday Jan 27, 1861 It is quite cold this morning. I did the chores & then went Dickersens to prepare for church. It was so late when I got ready that I thought I would not go. Mollie Litchfield rode to Church with Uncle Daniels folks. I staid to Dicks until almost night & then went over to do the chores. Orrin [?] and Mollie wanted to go to the Plaines to Church but it is cold that I would not take the Horses out I went to Church in evng Marie Underwood came over after Mollie. Nankin Monday 28.1861. I went Allyns & paid my taxes & Luthers My Taxes 90 cts [illegible in original] 229 In afternoon I helped Ed husk corn. I also mad some Brooms[?] for Henry Eveline was ther visiting In evening I went to Church Father Crane preached Not much of a turnout Nankin Tuesday Jan 29 1861 It is a very windy morning & Thomas Lakers & my self are drawing hay for Luther from stock to Horse barn. In afternoon I was reading Lena Rivers the which is a tolerable good story but as good as Homestead or the Hill Side by the same author. I was reading until 126 C midnight at which time I went to bed This evening the job was to be let of carrying the mail for Nankin PO.to R___-sville for six months. E Allen Babcock has the job at 23 cts pr Each Nankin Jan 230 1861 Wednesday I worked for Edgar drawing marsh hay. Palmer Reed helped. Betsey Blenk[?] was at Eds One of Dicks fatting hogs died & I am going to carry it to City I expected to have loaded a load of apples for the City- but it is so cold I don’t [illegible in original] It is still beautiful sleghing & I am having no sleghrides. Nankin Thursday Jan 31 1861 After doing the chores I loaded up a load of Apples for the City Bill Dickersen helped me. I started just before noon for the City & after a cold ride I got there about 4 ½ O.C. P.M. I sold all my load out apples for 3/- & 32 cts Spitz & Russetts I sold Dicks pork for 3 ½ - Mrs. Charlesworth & Sylvester Lacey had them trial today before the circuit Court in Detroit Nankin Friday Feb 1 1861 I staid at Beardsley in Detroit last night. This morning I went to the bank & got my pay for Appls. I bought a boot brush for my self. Luther paid me one dollar In Evening I took the train & went to Moulin Rouge to Speling school. I had a very good time. Mollie was in high glee as Geo Walker is home & C & C. Nankin Saturday Feb 2 1861. I went with Henry to get a load of hay for Fred Ditch. In afternoon there was Rhetorical Exercises at the school house. C. S. Bennet & Eb & Sylvester were there I did not go. Clark stoped after school & staid with me all night. I had a very good visit with him talking until nearly 11 O.C. Eb went to stay with Janette There was a load of folks from the burgh that started for the Spelling School last night but did not get there Kansas has been admitted as a state. Secession is all the go now there is great prospect now of a battle ere long at the south. Pacific RailRoad now pending awaiting the signature of the President Miss Electa Butter of Wayne was buried today She died with Typhoid Fever It is cold and dangerous [?] Nankin Sunday Feb 3d 1861 C.S. Bennett stayed with me last night & I had a good chat with him I went home with him instead of going to hear Almstead preach In afternoon I came back and went to Dickersens. Geo Walker & Mollie came over from her school. The girls came down & we went to Singing School. George Warden & wife are to Dicks since singing school. I went to the cabinet shop and staid until noon. Afternoon I slept some & cut some Bellflower Grafts Eveng I went to Post Office Wednesday Feb 6 1861 In forenoon loaded up a load of apples for the City and started home. I went up to Grand River House and saw Ed North. I had a good chat with him Nankin Thursday Feb 7, 61 I staid at Beerdsleys in Detroit last night. It is awful cold this morng. A boy stole a hat off the bar this morng. I started home after 11 O.C. & came home in less than three hours Uncle Daniel came when I did I did not get very cold. Somebody stole my whip I saw Butter today In eveng I went to Post office a& got two letters from Melvin I got a draft for father in one of them of $50. In the other I re ed a $1 bill from Mel. Friday Nankin Feb 8 1861 In forenoon I went to Wayne. It was colder then it was yesterday Father Henry & Luther went & we all took dinner at Dr Morrison, I bought a pair of Garters of Hammond[?] for 14/-. We then went to Depot to see about Henrys wood I had a good visit with Sape Morrison Nankin Feb 9 1861 Saturday In morning I went to Mr. Dickersens & then came over to shop and worked t on bobbs all day. Charles Straight worked in the making chain pump. In Eveng I went up to Dick and saw Alices sister & Husband that came from Dexter. The snow is going quite fast & the prospect is that the sleighing will not last very long. I went up to Uncle Daniels Sunday February 10 1861 Nankin In forenoon I went to church & heard Uncle Marcus preach. I then went to Dicks & wrote to GEO Allie I went over and saw Ross & got some Hickory woods. In eveng I went to church. I was with Uncle Daniel. RLouise did not go It rained quite hard when I went home from church. The snow is partly soft & will be gone by morng Monday Feb 11 1861 Nankin In morng I went dow to I.F.Perris & Uncle Marcus’s to see how they were going to Northvill to John’s Party I gave up going after it commenced raing. I helped the folks get ready to go & rode to the burgh. I saw Ross & concluded to go with him. M_ went with a cutter The sleighing is rather poor. George Swift & Laura & two children & Chases & Abels & lots of other folks were there There was plenty of going ones there I had a good time with Em. In evng I went with the young Folks to a surprise party in Novi. I had a good time Beth & Maria Brink went to concert at the C____bler House I staid at Ems House all night. In evng I went to Post office sent a Valentine to CG & the went to Dicks Eb was ther and came to bed with me. I went to singing school. After singing school I went up to Uncle Daniels; Milton & Ce___ went to church in eveng Jack was up there some. He and Lucia got a sleep & C & C. Eb Bennett was up today & went back to his school Nankin Monday Feb 18 1861 I worked in shop on bobbs all day almost It is some cold today Abe Lincoln staid in Buffalo yesterday. There is much danger of trouble at his enaugeration In evg I said in Lounge & had a good sleep Nankin MTuesday Feb 19 61 I wrote a valentin in fer____ [illegible in original] Pack & then went to burgh to take bobbs to Blockswatter. I am some expecting the mumps now but am all right yet Brase [?] has my buggy in the paint shop & says he will finish it next week if all is well. Social at Mr Hulls and the Pike tonight It is quite warm and pleasant Nankin Wednesday Feb 20, 18.61 I arose at the usual hour & after breakfast & choosy [?] was over I went to Uncle Swifts & got his carriage to go to Detroit with Luther went & carried father & myself to city. I had considerable trouble to get money as a check, but finaly succeeded I saw Ed Nortin. I went to find Cousin [?] Mat Cropmere [?] but was not at home. I receved a Valentine from Cornelia today Hea! Hea!! Hea!!! I was at Benj Durfees in evng. Detroit Feb 21 Thursday. 61 I staid at Benjamin Durfees last night did not sleep much. In morning Father & I went to Depot & took Cars for Adrian at 950/60 OC A.M. & C I arrived at Adrian soon afternoon found My folks with little difficulty Cous Mary Osband was at Adrian who I saw for the first time. The folks were usually well except to Mary and she is quite poorly. I fear she will never be any better I went down town with Marvin[?] to his market in evening. I went & saw my friend Geo. Seciry Esgn [?] & had a good chat with him and Vansant who was in Dr’s Office I also saw Pilly Gontin I have not seen much of the town yet but think I shall like it very well. Adrian Feb 22 186 Friday I staid at Cousins last night I arose at 7 O C this morg & visited until after ten. I wrote three letters to Melvin Cousin Mary A Durfee & Cousin Em Durfee. I went & mailed them & then went to College. I saw Turk Houghman & John McEldoway before dinner. I also attended the Trigonometry Class with Turk I went to dinner & saw McKeeves A.T. Chub [?] & Lady. also Lottie Pridliter and Minnie Hale of G_ep Lake after dinner I went up to Lotties room & had one good time with her & Minnie Hale. I then attended the Retorical Exercises of Prof McKeeves department At 3 OC President Mahan Lectured on Political Econ- omy. After having a good time with the boys I went down to cousins I had a good visit in evng and retired at 10. OC. Light guards celebrates Washington’s birth day today Adrian Saturday Feb 23 1861 It is an awful rainy day & I visit almost all the time. I did go down town & saw Dr. Levig a while. I also went to Depot to see if stage was for Clinton to Ypsilanti. I went all through the Machine shops & C after which I went all arround twice to see what I could see The folks have been expecting Cousin Maggie for some days but she has not come yet & doubtful if she does today or night Adrian Sunday Feb 24 61 I arose at the usual hour this morning and after visiting until 9’10 OC I started in company with Leary for the College to Church President Mahan preached after which D.P. Ingration and myself went of over to Prof McEldowaeys[?] to see his family. The folks were away from home but Lottie & Minnie were there. I had a very pleasant chat & then went over to Hale to dinner. After dinner I had a fine chat with Dr. Chub and Lady. Turk and I called on Miss Rutts. In evng I went to Church with Cousin Mary. I heard a Mr. [left blank in original] Preach his farewell sermon after he had preached in the same congregation for eightie years. Monday Feb 25 1861 Adrian In morng I went down town to market & then went with Marvin to take Father & Aunt Elizabeth to Mr. Townsends. I came back and after dinner I took Cl__des down & saw all the folks Cousin Lucy Durfee from Chicago. She is a real smart girl I think. I saw lots of Geological specimens which were very nice. In eveng a Mrs. Lakey & daughter was at Marvins and had a good chat with fath & the rest of them M I expect to go home tomorrow morg if all is well. I began to like this place very much. Adrian Tuesday Feb 26. 1861 Cousin Maggie came this morng very early. I visited with her nearly all day. She is an exslent girl that’s so. I learned a great deal about her folks, especially her mothers illness In afternoon Cousins Maggie & Mary & myself went down town shopping Cousin Maggie bought a dress for Cousin Mary. In evening Cousin Maggie & I went walking We had an e splendid time as it was moonlight and a very pleasant evening. I have seen considerable of the city & a large number of its inhabitants & I do like the place very much Ypsilanti Feb 27 1861 I staid in Adrian last night & this morning after bidding all the folks goodbye I started home by the way of Jackson. I got to Jackson just before noon & as there was time enough I went to the Prison. I went all through the shops. I saw Cyrus Started for Ypis 2.OC. I got to Ypis at 5.OC. & called on Mr. Bush. I took tea with him at Mr Creclmen[?] I saw [illegible in original]. Bush & I went up to Straights room I had a very good visit in evng and took a walk with Oscar Nankin Thursday Feb 28 I staid with Oscar in Ypsi last night came to wayne this morng on Callte train I stoped at Dr. Morrison & Had a chat with Sape & hug[?] Marshall. I rode over with [illegible in original] & learned that Sister helen had been in Nankin nearly a week. I called at Uncle Swifts and saw her there I called at Bill Dicks & saw Janett & cut some Grafts In evng I visited with Helen Friday Feb March 1 1861 I went & got Uncle Isaacs t__ and went to Wayne with after Laps Fanny & Mary Marshall Ross went ol¬¬__y & told me about Pecks threads of putty [?] then through for sending Jane & H___ In evng I went to an Oyster supper at Mat Straight’s had a very good time but a better one at the 2nd session Nankin Saturday March 2 In forenoon I went to Dicks after shors & saw Janett & Bessie. After noon I went with sister Helen to Edgars. I went to Picke Peak Petit__ are afloat for a Post office It is an awful _____ly time & it is warm & pleasant. Charles presented me with a label for my keys. I saw Ed Nortin and Gallaway & came home e about noon I stopd at Uncle Swifts to warn Some lots of folks at the Danativ [?] Jack & Oven [?] came home with me. I did not go the Danativ in evening There was lots of folks there. Was at home in evening. It is bad weather Nankin March 25 1861 Monday I worked at Shephards all day on frame. I expected to have gone to Rob’s this week but could not very well. Tuesday March 26 1861 It rained all night & considerable of the day. I went up & commenced work at Shephards & had to stop for the rain. I went to Dickersens & staid the evnng. It is high water now. Nankin Wednesday March 27/61 I worked for Shep all day on frame. It snowed & blowed and was very cold & disagreeable Water is very high Nankin March 28 Thursday 61 I worked for Shep ½ day & was sick & went to Coors Fishing. Caught two fish. Ell has the mumps.
