Osbands Diary for 1863 Detroit Barracks January 1st 1863 [various notes] [drawing and scribbles] Nankin Jan 1st 1863 I attended a small meeting last evening where I remained until some hours after the New Year commenced. In forenoon I went hunting with Oscar Luther Dr. Morrison & Reubin Glas. Caught Nothing as usual. Took dinner at Uncle Isaacs where I staid the most of the afternoon. In evening Henry & I went to Edgars Thomas Grow & Cal Coley were married yesterday Lucia Straight’s health is very poor. I fear she will never be any better. Ebenezer Bennett is home this week. Miss Adel [?] Straight has a New Mclodean Dealt Felton had his discharge day before yesterday. Sarah Henry has gone to Hillsdale visiting Detroit Jan 2nd 1862 I staid at Henrys last night I call to see Dade Norton this forenoon. He was dieing [?] when I was there. Poor fellow, how he did suffer. I call at Dicks & then went up to Uncle daniels where I staid until after dinner. I had a good time Oscar has gone to his School. Soon after dinner I bid them good bye expecting to see Dixie before I saw them again I fear I shall never see Lucia again. I called a short time at Luthers. I walked from there to Wayne through the mud. I staid at the Dr’s until bar time. I took Tea with them I had a good visit with them I came in on Mail train and went to B. Durfees and spent the evng. It is warm Detroit Barracks Jan 3d 1862 I staid at Benjamin Durfees last night After breakfast I went to Col Smiths Office & Reported I then went to Welches and got my papers and drew $12.00 ration money. I bought Some Stationary and this blank book. Knapsacks straps &C &C. I got here in time to get my dinner. It seems to be all [illegible in original] here now Chapin has a Recruiting fur- lough. It is awful rainy and the mud is not shallow by any means. Well, I am now in the old Barracks again. I dont know how long I shall stay here, but think not long. Spencer Hurlbut [?] tells me that Capt Sowing has been here since I been gone and he is all right for a Commission in the Battery I am feeling somewhat lonesome tonight. I had expected to have gone to my Rgt the forepart of next week but now I understand that it is imposible to get to the Rgt as Morgan has been raising the mischiefs on the Rail Road between Louisville & Nashville. There are but few boys here now and it is realy lonesome I realy wish that I was with my Regt tonight. I am anxious to go but I dont that I can stand it in Rgt but if I go I dont know but I may be heartier than I am now. I rather think our folks have had the worst of it in the late battles at Mumsfordsville & Murfrees burough. The Railroad is out of order so that I cant get to my Rgt in two weeks or longer I will Detroit Barracks Dec 4th 1862 In forenoon I attended Church in the City. I heard an exelent Sermon. In afternoon I wrote to Louise. I had a long talk with Capt Robinson about Palmyra [?] people. This is a lonesome day for me. A Soldiers life is one that is calculated to make one rough or noisy at least Chapin has been detailed on Recruiting Service December 5th 1862 I was in Barracks all day & wrote to Melvin & Louise I think I shall not stay here long. The war news is more favorable again. I dont think the war will close very soon. The Proclimation is a good thing but at pesent I dont think it benefits the prospects of our army Detroit Barracks Jan 6- 63 I wrote a letter to Em Durfee today in answer to one I received this P.M. I have put a pocket in my coat today Vicksburgh is in our posession and Col Wisner is dead and passes through this City on his way home today The 28th Infantry has mooved to Ypsilanti Detroit Barracks Jan 7 I took command of Barrack No 1 again this A.M. I also have to see to the Ex- amination of Recruits I received a letter from Louise & answered it today War news is favorable now. Wednesday Jan 21 63 I wrote to Melvin today A large Squad are being paid today and Chapin goes with them tomorrow Steward is gone & I have to be in upper Hospital most of the time It is very warm and wet under foot It seems by todays paper that the quota of Michigan is more than full by nearly four thousand Wont be opt to draft I guess Thursday Jan 22 1893 Steward not back yet and some think he has gone to Canada I am taking charge of upper went Hospital now Chapin gone to his Regiment this morning Recruits come in Hourly It is reported that Gen Hooker has crossed the Rapahannock and the Rebels are skedaddling for Richmond before him. I wrote a letter to Dr Klein Detroit The boys are building cook houses. The boys came in tonight from Atlanta with some beef cattle [?] for Co H that Cook as though they should be fed some before they are fit to eat. It rains this evenng very hard We hear tonight that Grant has taken Petersburg with 42 000 prisoners also that Grant is Wounded We hear that Gov Bron [?] Rebel Governor of Georgia has [illegible in original] the W. States the state Militia and that Jef Davis has sued for peace. I think things are going well now and that the war will come to an End within nine months at the longest. The 4th Mich cav [?] went in camp across the river tonight a Brigade came in tonight west of us. Chattahoochee River Ga Sunday October 2d, 1864 The three bridges across the Chattahoochee went off last night. The water is high in the River. I think this will make a fine job for Co H. Bissels enginers were putting a pontoon bridge across above us today. Our boys had an Election this AM The Result was 98 Lincoln & Johnson and 23 for McLellan & Pendleton A train of cars came through for Atlanta this morning but finding the bridge gone had to go back. I wrote a letter to Louise in afternoon. One of the Recruits by the name Wing preached to us this afternoon. We hear heavy firing west of us tonight There are lots of troops coming in from Atlanta on cars and crossing on Pontoons this afternoon It is rainy tonight and everythings bids fair for a rainy night Chattahoochee River Georgia Monday Oct 3d. 1864 Ed Lapham and I did some washing this A.M The Bridgebuilders are here from Atlanta to repair the bridge. Soldiers both Cav & Infty have both been going North all day there were three or four Batteries with them Report says that Kilpatrick got whiped last night off west of here where we heard the firing. Rebs are reported to be at Marietta too raising cane. I think they will have a bad job to get back without being taken. Afternoon I help put a rope across the River and get the measurement for bents. Report says that our army Captured 800 prisoners and several pieces of Artilery from the Rebs betwe Marietta and Big shanty last night Gen Sherman was here in town yesterday I wrote a letter to Dr Morrson today Thursday Oct 6. 1864. I was in Camp all day It is to rainy to work today (No News) The Friday Oct 7. 64 In forenoon I went to [illegible in original] Station after load of timber for bridge Saw the Col and Cos A.C. & G. of the Regt going to the rear to repair R Road Orderly went and got clothing today. Capt grant went down beyond Marietta with the Col & thre companies. Report says once tonight that the R. Road is all clear and then again we hear that Cap brought news that though there are lots of Rebs in sight of Knesaw [?] Mt. Some of the boys says that we will have move tomorrow. Saturday Oct 8. 1864 It is cold and windy today. I worked all day across the river framing bridge timber A squad of men went to Marietta today after plank for bridge. Another squad went into the woods getting out timber about fifty of the Regimental teams came through on the way to Marietta but came back on hearing that the Rebs were only three miles from here in that direction. They stay here tonight. I hear that Co H is going through to Marietta with them tomorrow. Lots of the boys are drawing clothing tonight. I could not get mine tonight. The men have nearly finished the R. R. Bridge across the river R. Road [illegible in original] is going back to repair the Road beyond Big shanty. All the troops arround here were out at 4 Oclock AM today in line Expecting an attack. It is pretty generally expected that the Rebs are coming back and that they will try to cross the River at this place. All the Infantry have been busy all day today and for three or four days back repairing all the fortifications and digging new lines of Rifle pitts and staking them. This plase will be a showy one for them, so much so that they will not be able to get back by the way of crossing these Pontoon Bridges short [?] Rations [illegible in original] Chattahoochee River Ga Sunday Oct 9. 64. It was awful cold last night I slept cold. There was quite a heavy frost this morning. We had breakfast Early and Co H. went with our wagon train as guards to within two miles of BShanty We rode most of the way no wagons but marched enough so that with the cold I have makes me very tired. The men finished the R..R..Bridge today and I crossed on it tonight My eyes are very sore tonight Report says today that Gen Thomas is wounded and that Gen Grant is within three miles of Richmond We got some beef today which adds much to our living, for we have been living on bread & coffee for some days ^ alow. Report says the R,R,B at Rescue went off with the [illegible in original] Monday Oct 10. 1864 The boys got some more Rations today but no meat. Rations in this part of the Country are getting poorer [?]. This forenoon I went out two miles and got a load of brick to make some fire places. McGee built it one in our tent this P.M. I am almost sick today with a cold. I saw where the Rebs tore up track yesterday when I was up to Big Shanty. We hear that the boys at Atlanta expect to go home on the 20 of this month. Report says today that Richmond is ours. There is no work being done today. We clean guns wash & C today and are having a lazy day. One of the boys across the R R was shot this after noon out about two miles on the Atlanta Road while carying Dispatches to Atlanta He was shot through the body & head and then two [illegible in original] thrugh him Chattahoochee River Tuesday Oct 11. 64 I worked all day framing except while I was helping drive a beef cutter [?] into camp. Some of the boys went North and some South today to get out timber for the Bridge. It is some warmer today. The report is confirmed that Richmond is in our hand. Politics is all the go now adays. Wednesday October 12, 1864 This has been a warm and pleasant day after so cool a morning Our fireplace comes in play nights & mornings for it is uncomfortably cold. I worked all day framing on the bridge The framing is almost done. Mel says he had some Lamp [?] tonight Two beef cattle left us today Friday Oct 14, 1864 I worked on frame all day. Mail came to Atlanta last night but none of it has got here today. Some of the boys are signing a petition for Col Innes to remain with the Regt. I dont sign it myself. I hear today that our boys had a fight at Resaca day before yesterday and whiped the Rebs badly. Commenced raising bridge this A.M. The weather is warm during the day but cold at night Chattahoochee River Ga Saturday Oct. 15, 1864 I worked all day framing on bridge and a squad of men worked raising it. The orderly and teams went to Atlanta today and got Rations and the mail This is the first mail I have received since I left Cartersville I got four letters from Louise and one from Edgar & Frank Forbes. I also got two papers from Louise It is reported that there is a band of some two hundred Rebs at peachtree Creek that are gobbling our Grazing [illegible in original] It is also reported that the RR track is torn up for fifteen miles in the vicinity of Resacca. I dont believe the [illegible in original] Rations are short [illegible in original] & work dont go very lively here Sunday October 16, 1864 We hear this morning that the RRoad is in repair through to Chattanooga Two hundred men from 1st Brigade 1st Division of 20th Army Corps went out this A.M. in search of Rebs with two days Rations in Haversacks. Some of the boys are busy visiting home today but I think I shall probably start in that direction in thre or four days [Doodle] Monday Oct 17, 1864 I worked framing on bridge all day Capt Grant was mustered as Maj today. Bridge raising goes slow and I hear that somebody else has the job of finishing it I hear today that the hardest fight of the campaign was at Resacca Saturday & Sunday Sherman whiped 9th Mich went home today. Tuesday October 18. 1864. We all laid still in forenoon or done what we chose to do. Afternoon I worked framing on bridge. We are to finish the bridge now I hear. We hear today that Thomas has capturedd two Divisions of the Rebs in the vicinity of Rome also that they are in full retreat & our forces hot after them. Fifteen miles of the R Road is said to be torn up by Resacca somewhere. The Rebs captured three hundred and fifty mules today from the pontoon train while out fulling [?] and within two miles of Camp Grant comes out today with leaves on his Shoulders. I hear that Maj Yates is to be Colonel of the Regt & Hanning Lt Col which will make Grant 1st Maj Ed Lapham is mending. Joe Lake fidling and Moe [?] reading this evnn Wednesday October 19. 1864 I worked all day framing on bridge A large wagon train went out in this country for aging this morning. They took three days rations with them There were six hundred Infantry went with them as guards We learn tonight that they had a fight with some Rebs and one man came in wounded This P.M. there was a train of cars burned this afternoon some three & ½ miles from here. I saw some of the Soldiers that was on the train and got away from them They said there was 250 of the Rebs. I don’t know whether any of our boys were – killed or not. Orders to have every Thing ready for an attack tonight So that if they do come will give them a warm reception. It is pleasant and weather now just cool Enough to work Chattahoochee River Georgia Thursday Oct 20. 64 We hear that the Rebs did not kill any of our men up on the R.R. last night. When the boys that went up there from here got there they fired with another squad of our men that came from Marietta The train came back from up there this A.M. and when a mile & ½ towards Atlanta from this place the Rebs fired on the train with a piece of Artillery but did not do much for the Engineer put on steam and broke the train in two so that part of the train consisting of four cars loaded with RR [illegible in original It was down grade and the cars came so fast that they ran across the Bridge here there is considerable excitement here now. Lots of soldiers are going but today The boys begin to think that we will not be able to get home when our time. The road is torn up so that [illegible in original] or anything Else cant get through to Chattanoogoo. I hear to that the Tennessee and Alabama is all torn up between Huntsville and Columbia. If that is so our last summers work has gone to the shades [?]. Tod_ I cant help the thing but do hope we will get home for Election. I think now that we shall be mustered out I worked on frame all day. Business on the RailRoad is [illegible in original] again this PM for five trains went towards Atlanta this evng. Drew part Rations of Hard tack & Sugar & coffee but no meat Friday October 21st 1864 I worked on frame all day. I got a letter and two papers from Louise tonight. I learned from them all about who was Drafted in our Town. Our foraging train came in today noon loaded down with corn. They did not see a Rebel while they was gone. A train of over five hundred wagons went from Atlanta a few days go & was gone five days and all came back heavily loaded. Maj lost some twenty men on the trip. Saturday Oct 22 1864 I worked on frame all day It is cold today. The hands finished the R.R. Bridge today. I hear that the men in Atlanta have been returned from duty but I suppose we will have to work until Thursday Sunday October 23, 1864. I have been in camp all day. I finished a letter to Frank Forbes and mailed it. I commenced a letter to Aunt Elizabeth but finaly bound [?] it up. This has been a long day. The thre Cos from up the R Road passed by here today on their way to Atlanta. I pounded some corn and made some mush tonight. I have been reading some today and on the whole I think I have been rather lazy. Monday Oct 24, 1864 I worked on frame all day. It is warm & pleasant today. Our Dischge paper came today to be filled out by the Clerks Tuesday Oct 25 1864 | I worked on bridge today. We almost finished it We are relieved from further duty tonight. Maj Grant went to Atlanta today Byy [?] & b__age. David Johnson was here today and says we will go to Detroit to get our pay Ed Lapham is Q M Sergent and went to Atlanta today to commence operation. Chattahoochee River Georgia Wednesday Oct 26. 64 We turned over our Guns & C today and the boys are fixing a rig to carry their clothes in. The Officers have a grand drunk. We have a corn pudding for supper The boys appear to feel well and I feel more like a free man then I have for a long time before Atlanta Georgia Thursday Oct 27, 1864 I was in camp at the Chattahoochee all the forenoon. It rained hard most we of the time. At noon I started for this place on the cars. The fortifications are out two or three miles from this place once [illegible in original] to the city and as for each Ride of the R Road as the eye can see. Almost Every building I have seen in the City has shell marks about them. The Regt is camped in the city about half mile from the Depot. I stay in Co Co [?] with Miller until we are mustered out. I shall try and go arround the City some tomorrow. It dont appear to be so large a city as I supposed it was. City of Atlanta Ga Friday Oct 28 164 I was in Camp all forenoon. In after- noon Miller & I went out to the place where the large Rolling Mills were burned by the Rebels. It was a large institution there were proles [?] of ammunition destroyed. We then went through the City The City is being strongly fortified by large forts on all the high places in the city They tear down the handsom- est houses in town and put a large fort in its stead. The Courthouse is a large building I bought a Frank Leslie today The city is well banged up and a good many buildings were burned by the shells that Sherman threw into the City The city is on a rough piece of ground and is nothing as far as beauty or expense is concerned compared with Indianapolis or Detroit The buildings are two stories in the heart of the City and the streets very irregular There is a large Depot here and it is a nice one too but Sherman put lots of windows in it when he was three miles from the city I wrote to Louise Saturday Oct 29 I was mustered three years ago today. The Paymaster came this PM and we now think we will be paid tomorrow and start for home Monday I saw MVB [?] Shephard today He belongs to an Ohio Regt but is here right now speculating by [illegible in original] south Soldiers Cos E & F came up this RM [?] so that when we get our pay we shall all be here to start for home I think perhaps to [?] start Monday. I got two letters from Louise yesterday and a [illegible in original] from Eb Bennett at Lancaster. I also got a ticket and Circular from the Republican Wayne Co Com- mittee. Lincoln & Johnson is all the go here nowadays Sunday Oct 30 64 I went out on a [illegible in original] today with Johnson Young & Lapham I got some parts of Rebel shells which I shall try and take home. We went out to the outer defences of the City and found them to be very strong and durable We hear tonight that we will be mustered out of the service tomorrow 10 AM Evening I went to Co E and had a chat with Hunter The officers are having a grand drunk tonight. The boys think that the Col is keeping us here to avoid our getting home to Election. It is a fine day. Atlanta Georgia Oct 31st We were mustered out of Service at 12 M today. Report says that the Regt has orders to march in a few days There is some talk of Evacuating this City. I dont know where it came from If such a thing should be done there will not be a house left unburned I got some Palmetto leaves tonight. This City has some splendid Dwellings City of Atlanta Tuesday November 1st 164 One week from today is Elections and where will I be then? If we start for home tomorrow ( & I guess I shall) we will with good luck get to Detroit The Regt was paid off today. I did not sign the Pay Roles consequently I did not receive my pay. I got some money of the Boys that was owing me Wednesday Oct 29. 8 AM. It rained all night hard this morning a large house burned close to camp. Probably was set on fire by some of the boys. On the Cars near Cartersville Ga Thursday Nov 3d We left Atlanta about noon today We are on a train loaded down with fixed ammunition It is cold and rainy. Some of the boys rode on top of the cars until they were most frozen The train runs slow it has such a heavy load. The train ahead of us ran off the track near Altona some time in the night our boys finished the Bridge & were in Atlanta when we left [illegible in original] marched from the Chatahoochee river through the mud & saw [?] in the forenoon On the Cars Dalton Ga Friday Nov 4, 1864 We lay at Cartersvillle until nearly noon. We lay over thre hours at Calhoun. The 14th Army Corps was at Calhoun. It is Commanded by J/C Davis The 13th & 21st Mich was there. We saw lots of troops on the Road. Empty Cars are being sent to Atlanta and loaded ones are coming this way. I think that Atlanta will be burned and the army go some where south of there and the place left Entirely It will do the Rebs no good after the City is destroyed Cleveland East Tenn Saturday Nov 5th We did not leave Dalton until most noon. There was some cars off the track on the road to Chatta- nooga so we took the Knoxville Road and came to this place We saw some handsome country and this is a fine town. I bought Butter & apples here. We shall leave here some time during the night for Chattanooga It is 28 miles from Dalton to Cleveland and 30 from C to Chatanooga. One of the Cars on our train ran off the track twice We drew Rations today Chatanooga Sunday Nov 6.th We got here this AM Sometime We stop near the River in a large warehouse Drake came down to see us. I went over to No 2 [?] Hospt to see Dr Morrison. He has gone home. We drew 5 days Rations today. It is a hard job to get a passage Northward now for there are so many trains on duty south of this. This is quite a place. I never saw the City before as the Depot is out of town This is a strongly fortified place. Chattanooga Monday Nov 7. 64 I wrote to Louise today. We are on a slow Train and will have to ride all night. I had some bread and milktonight. Friday Nov 11., 1864. On the Jefferson and Ind RR We got into Louisville at 2 Oclk PM and marched from the cars to the Ferry immediately. We got on the ferry and had some trouble about some Darkies crossing the River We got on the cars about 6 o clock at Jefferson. We expected to have had good cars but as we are on an extra train we had to take Box cars I have plenty room and try spead our blankets down and go in for the night.
