General Negley was born in East Liberty, Pa., December 26th, 1826. He eulisted In April, 1861, he was commissioned as a private and served in the Mexican War. bricradier general of voluuteers; served in Alabama and Tennessee with the Army of 0 tbe 0hio; and at the battle of La>ergne, October 7th, 1862, was in command, defeating tl10 Confederates under Generals Anderson anrl Forrest. He was promoted major gen(cid:173) eral for gallantry at Stone River, and at the battle of Chickamauga held Owen's Gap. He settled in Pittsburg after the war, und represented that city in Congress. Major General McDowell wa' born in Ohio. October 15th, L. l • graduated from West Point in I 3 . He held se'l"erul military poai(cid:173) tions until the breaking out of the war, when hewn· given com(cid:173) mand of the Army of the Potomac.
