This diary contains brief journal entries from McCullagh's service in 1862. It mainly tracks his movements with the Michigan 1st Infantry in Virginia and only includes passing remarks about skirmishes or battles. Some notable entries mention a naval shelling, a deadly fire that broke out in camp, the capture of enemy prisoners, and near the end of the journal, he includes a short poem as well as a drawing of a ship and his camp.
