Camp Mc Kim Baltimore Sept 8th, 61 Dear Brother & Sister It is now about 6 oclock it is all stir everybody is up on their [tops?] I am well there are A good many of our men are sick very sick it is more on account of eating all sorts of green rubish that is sold in camp than anything else I will give you A graphic description of our camp also our journey here Friday we left Kalamazoo by way of Detroit left Detroit Friday eve. 9 oclock for Cleavland by Steamer we ay arrived in Cleavland Saturd^ morning about sunrise took the cars for Pitsburg arrived in Pitsburg at 9 in the evening left at 1 took another train for Harrisburg arrived at Harris burg the next night at ten slung our knapsacks again got off the train were drawn up in A line our mess chests were opened received our rations took supper on the ground that is the way we do every day we were carried over the road in A hog train from Pitsburg to Baltimore we arrived in Baltimore 11 oclock in the morning we made A great deal better time than we expected we started Friday arrived in Baltimore on Monday when we got to Baltimore we were marched d to another depo put aboar^ another train for Washington after waiting about 3 hours we got A despatch & were next s ordered to sling our knapsack^ again were again marched through the city of Balti more without A single gun we were loudly cheered everywhere I have not seen A single Secession flag since I came here Baltimore is one of the finest places in the whole country we can stand in camp & look all over the city down the Bay see Fort Mc Henry Federal Hill also another Fort from here it is 7 mi from here down the Bay the we have not as yet gotten our arms we we have A lot of [illegible in original] ones to drill with our camp is on A high piece of ground in the 8th Ward the hotest secession ward in the city our guards are once in a while [stirred?] one of the guards shot at A ng man night before last for stonei^ him did not hit him how long we will stay here I do not know yesterday they were fighting at Arlington Hights our men took Munsons Hill I hope we will have A [brush?] with them you will give my respects to all I was married before I left to Carie you know who of Grass Lake give my respects to all Direct yours to Sergeant Surdam Baltimore M.D. Co.
