Algiers La Sept 13/63 Dear Sister I received yours of the yesterday (Aug) 17th and it came in good time for I had just returned from the attack on Sabine City Texas by the gun boats and the troops were along to land if the Gun boats had cleared the rebs from the fort but they did not and we Lost one Gun boat and had to return to New Orleans. I think that we will have to go by Land Soon as the men get a little wrest and then for a nice Little march of 400 miles through the sand and wo to poor Soldier that Looses his shoes for the sand will burn his feet off it has been verry warm here this summer and is some warm now if Im a judge of weather we almost roast in our tents but the men do not mind the weather as much as they do the defeat that the gun Boats got at Sabine. I got a Letter from Walter Higgins yesterday and it came very welcome he says that Jeff is with his father at the oil mines in Pennva if I understand the letter right and if you find out any thing about it you must Let me know for it seems like to good news to be true you want to know if I get enough to eat. Yes and to spare it is not cakes and pie but plenty of good hearty food those men that say that they don't get but one days rations in ten I think that they Stretch it some for I have never been not even one day without my rations since I have been in the army and I think that it is the mens own fault if they go with out theirs I will tell you how I think they came to be without their rations so Long, their was some in our Regt when we where on the march that got the Shell fever before we got to Port Hudson and stragled from the Regt and was not seen for several days and of course could not get their rations. if men stay in their place there is not much danger of their starving in this army I am as tierd of the war as any Boddy but grumbling wont stop the fighting any sooner I will not get a furlough this summer and I don't know that that I want any till I get one to stay for good the mail is going to close and so must I so good bye, Give my Love to mamma and the children and remember me to Mrs Harma and Mrs Vantyle and all the rest of the woman Your Brother Jim to Cate To Sol I am glad to hear that you are getting along so well and that the crops are so good hope you don't get drafted write soon and tell all the rest to write as often as they can we will have another fight I think soon write often as you can adres as before from Brother Jim to Sol Hardenbergh
