Israel says the weather is cold and wet, but he and the other soldiers are eager to fight. They have not been paid in four months, which angered the men because they cannot afford paper and stamps. Israel goes on to describe their drill procedures and their rations. He requests a pair of leather gloves from his family and sends his father a gold pen.
