Israel updates his parents on the status of some soldiers from their hometown. He goes on to claim that the Union and Confederate soldiers on the skirmish line were getting along very well. He asserted that each side traded coffee and tobacco and they even coordinated a fake offensive whereby the Confederates would shoot blanks and the Union soldiers would shoot over their opponents' heads. Israel says they carried out this plan and all the Confederates surrendered, which demonstrated their disaffection with the war effort. It is unclear whether this story is true or not.
