8th 63 Bowling Green F March Friend Hariet Agreeable to your Sons request I have seated myself to write a few lines for him’ as he is quite unwell and not able to write himself monday’ he was taken sick last ^ in camp was brought down here to the [written in pencil] [rods] Hospital about 20 ^ rods from the [illegible] where I am wednesday last I went over to see him yesterday he was quite easy not dangerously sick the physition told me he would get along after alittle) I have Just recd a large box of eatables from my Dear Friends containing a great variety he thought yesterday he would like ^ some dried plumbs he said he was getting some tired of apple sauce such as they have there) I am going over agan before I close and take him some plumbs and if there is any thing els in my box the doctor thinks suitable for him to eat he shal have it) he has almost everything as it is that would add to his comfo- -rt and [good?] nurses I think we will not remane here long as we nomore belong to the army of kentucky but army of Ohio we are under Gen Rickts command of Cincinnati will Ohio post probably ^ be at Lewisville last Monday evening the freight train left here for nashville consisting of engine and 17 car, loaded with mules .. after she proceded eight miles down at first station was captured by the rebbels about fifteen in number and soon were reinforsed taking the engineer conductor and breakman by force and gave them parole furlows ^ then unhitched the cars from the engine and fired them turning on a full head of steam let the old horse go meby you,d like to [had?] a ride. she run forty mile, in thirty minutes passing several stations) but as luck would have it she met with no accident while writing this morning my mind wanders back to scenes of earlier days when we were sheltered by the same roof surrounded the same fireside, but alas how changed little did we dream of the horrors of war then, and that our homes would so soon be left desolate and so many mourn the loss of near and dear friends yet I am not wholly [crossed out word illegible] discouraged, hope on hope ever trust in God is my motto let us trust that through some unseen power the horrors of war will soon sease to exist, tho every thing is overshadowed and look dark at the present, I will go over and see israel now before I write any more). as George has wrote me this letter because I was not able to do it my self the day that he did but I begin to feel more like myself George just brought me over a few dried plums to [Stew?] and he brought [crossed out] [me] me and another feller a nice applies. I had some thought that I would for another Small box and you may send me one if you can it will cost you [$2? $24?] dont send any butter. but lots of plum. Pa send me a nice bottle of Linament how dos wille like his little cannon. Ma how do you like your gold pen I want you to send the Box as soon as you get this when you write tell all all the news now as I am tired I will quit Direct the box just as you do my letters. from your ever true son IGA Israel is somuch better this morning that he has written himself so I shal not need to write anymore for him I see he has wrote for a box. that is all right I have no doubt it add to his comfort some but we are getting better fare than we have had during the winter I will state what they get at the hospital where Israe is they have butter toast tea sauce and rice three times a day and sometime pie or cake also potatoes and meat I have stated this not to discourage you from sending a box but rather that yo might be better able to judge whether it was necessary or not dont write to him what I have said about it he might be offended give my respects to Mr Atkins also to Sister & Brother [Avery?] when you see them & accept a large share yourself Yours Respectfully G.N.
