James notes that he has contracted mumps and several of his friends are also sick. He asks Emma to take care of a chest full of his belongings and gives her permission to burn a book if she deems it necessary. James asks for some dried beef and sausage then goes on to write that he prefers camps life to the city as long as it is not muddy.
