James explains, in rich detail, his regiment's skirmishes with Confederate forces, which likely occurred on the 24th of March. One vignette describes a Union solider who convinced an enemy combatant that he was a Confederate soldier who had taken a gun from a "d__d yankee" and was looking to take a horse. The Confederate soldier bought his story and left him alone. James continues by detailing his regiment's marches over a period of several days. He then lists the types of food and other rations that are given to the soldiers. James dispells Emma's idea that he runs a lot as a soldier. He only recalls one instance when he ran and it was early in his soldier career.
