Parkhurst's diary mainly discusses his daily habits of work, socializing with friends and colleagues, and his business transactions. On May 24th, Amelia (maiden name Noyes)--Parkhurst's wife--gave birth to their second daughter, Margaret (referred to as Maggie). Amelia fell ill after childbirth and never recovered. Parkhurst's diary traces the ups and downs of her sickness until she passed away on July 26th. Parkhurst was mustered in on October 15th as Lieutenant Colonel of the 9th Michigan Infantry. He briefly mentions meetings with other officers and the movements of their regiment. On December 30th, Parkhurst is put in command of the battalion because the previous commander, Colonel William Ward Duffield, is reassigned to the 23rd Michigan Brigade.
