Friend [Hartis?] I once more take up my pen to write a fue lines to let you know that I am well at presant and hope that this will find you the Sam. Wee are now firing on the old battle field whare wee fot one year and a half a go it is on the [illegible in original] it is a hard plais to fite a battle for it is all woods and Swamp land but I think that wee will have Ritchmond this time for wee have whiped them this far wee have drove them over [illegible in original] miles and pity if wee cant drive them seven miles more: our rigement has lost one hundred and fifty killed and wounded So far and wee are likly to los three times that before wee are dun with it but I have bin lucky So fare but They tride to kill me several times but have not maid out yet our rigement maid a charge on the enemy rifle pits last night and wee took them and held them but it was hard work the dead rebbles lay in heaps of ten and fifteen in a heap so you See that wee did Slay then rite Smart but it came near costing my life the Shells cain thick and fast one bursted in a bout ten feet of me and one pear hit me but it did not hurt me mutch . then I had a rifle ball hit So near mee that it maid a hoal in my bloss [ov rcoat?] So you See that I am not bulit proof yet: I have not got no more paper so you must excuse me for this time: Write as Soon as you git this and oblige your humble Survent W H H Walworth fowd By H Shaw
