Head Quarters 44th Regt N.Y.S.V. Alexandria va Monday Feb 22nd 1864 Friends at Home I have been looking anxiously for several days for news from Home and have come to the conclusion not to wait any longer but write you a few lines for I know you will be glad to hear from me as often as possis possible We were paid off saturday last for the months of November & December I was calculating to send $15'00 home but George [Bunt?] wants to borrow $5'00 till next pay day so I shall send only $10'00 You can use it as I told you some time ago if you wish. if there is any money more than you wish to y use, or if you have got any that I have sent home before this that is not in use I will give directions in my next for putting it in a way to be earning something We hear the good news this morning that we are transfered from the Army and if so (and I see no reason to doubt it we shall not be able to see any more field service. I understand the Army of the Potomac is to be re-organized and if that is done and the do not call us from here it is a pretty sure sign that we will stay here during the summer I wrote a letter to Brother George yesterday making the third one I have written since I received his last, it is strange that letters do not go through more correct News is rather scarse now a-days but I suppose we shall have pleanty of it before many days. for I expect the spring campaign will open pretty early in the Southwest and I think the most of the fighting will be in that quarter It is getting dark and I must close, write soon and oblige Yours Truly J H Wheeler Co H 44th Regt To Friends at Home NYSV
