Thursday Oct 9th 1862 Friends at home Again I find myself seated at the window where I used to sit. writing to absent friends. I arrived here safe about noon to day and have taken up the [band?] I gave without any trouble and am now all right so far as that is conserned. The boy that went home with me got back about 2 hours before I did and some that got furloughs the same day we did have not got back yet what so I do not see but ^ I done about as well as any of them. I had a pleasant journey but was most dreadful sleepy but I suppose you will not [wonder?] at that if you do I do'nt. I went to [Hornellsville?] on the very freight for $1'00 and it cost me $7'20 from there. so you see I got through a little cheeper than I expected. I passed through some very beautiful country and some very barren country. there were 10 deserters in the same car with me with hand-cuffs on. in charge of a United States officer. they were on their way to Fort Layfaette Lafayette I did not envy their position I assure you. things look old fashion here. there has been some addition to the numbers since I left otherways ther is not much difference I found 2 letters from Mother here, one containing the medicine and another with some stamps also one letter from Nancy, and one from William I do not know how long I shall stay here but presume it will be a week or ten days, so you may direct as formerly that is to Island Hospital etc ---------------------- I feel pretty lame and sore after being shook around so much but I shall soon get over that.. There is not much that I can think of to write so I will close for this time by subscribing myself yours affectionately J H Wheeler J.H. Wheeler Write Soon etc
