Benton Barricks Dec 26/61 Dear Parents I take this oppertunery again of writing you a few lines to let you know that I am well, but probably before this reaches you you will have heard that Cornelius Quick is dead. yes war is at an end with poor Quick he [crossed out] [didd] died yesterday morning the 25th at 20 min past 6 he was derainged the most of the time for the last two days but in his last moments he was rational but he was so far gon that he could not speake though it appeared as if he had a goodeal to say. he died very eary but he had wasted away to nothing. in less than an hour after his death he was announced in camp thare was over [50?] dolars raised to scend his rem ains home almost every boy in the company giving a dolar, they got him a very nice walnut coffin had him embalmed paid the ecspress charges and cent him home in the care of Dave Smith at Fentonvill the^whole cost of every thing was [illegible] Quick was one of the best boys in the Company, and dad the respect of all who knew him, you will get the full particulars in the Fentonvill paper next weak, but he had the best of care and it seamed as if his time had come. We had a pair of pants for our christmass present we have jest got our pants they are a good deal finer clothe than the first but are not as good for this ware . our sadles and sabres have come and such as horses will be equipped now pretty soon but thare is but 62 horses to accompany yet and that is more than we can man with men fit for duty , thare was another regiment left here this morning with four peaices of artillery 2 [illegible] & [illegible letters] with [illegible] orders but it was the soldiers that they were going to the [illegible] & St. Jo railrode as that has ben destroid by the rebles No more at present Write soon and often and put be sure to ^ the letter of our company and the number of our regiment on I remain your most dutifull son Harrison Traphagen
