Augustus writes from Camp Benton noting that there are enough barracks for 20,000 men, and that Regiments are constantly coming and going. Augustus details that they are very strict here and that two men have been shot trying to run the yard, another shot accidentally, and two more poisoned by whiskey. Augustus writes that he attempted to get a furlough before they left Grand Rapids but it was not accepted, nor did they stop in Adrian giving him the chance to see Uncle Francis. Augustus notes that he and Orlando each had a photograph taken that was left at the depot for Uncle Francis to send home, and that each boy in the regiment had a picture taken to be sent back to the South Haven Literary Club and displayed in the hall. Augustus continues by detailing that he received a letter from Orlando the day before leaving Grand Rapids and that he is doing well. Augustus concludes by writing that they have plenty of food including beef, bacon, potatoes, coffee and sugar, baker's bread, beans, and rice, but no butter.
