Camp Nelson July 26th /63 Dear Sister I received your letter last Friday and was glad to hear from you I wrote to you the the other day and directed it to Richland so I thought I would write again to day my health is getting pretty good now Erastus is well he is on guard to day. our Regiment is scattered a good ways now the most of them left the night of the 4 after morgan the last we heard of them part was at Covington Ky the rest was at Buffington they was in the fight with morgan the Col- got a letter from the Regt that they took 300 prisoners and 3.50 Horses they marched 16 day the next morning before daylight for the mountains there was about 16 of our Company left to take care of the camp I was one of them that was left they got to where the Rebels were about 3 ocloc the 10th Kentucky had Engaged them as soon as they saw our Regiment and the 9 Mich they ran up the sides of the mountains our men had a battery and they let the shells fly up [illegible] after them lively there was but two Co of Regt that shot with their Rifles our Co was guard for the Battery they took about 90 prisoners and over 100 horses I dont know how many was killed of the Rebels there was only [crossed out][th] two of our Regt that got seratehed at all the Rebel Prisoners said they did not want to fight against such guns [crossed out][as] as we had for we kept Shooting all the time without loading our Rifles Shoot seven times and our Revolvers six without load ing we left our Camp near Mt Sterling yesterd ay morning and got here about 11 oclock last night they are getting the Horses shod to day we expect to go to Hickmans Bridge tomorrow Erastus is well he was in the Skirmish the Boys found all sorts of stuf that the Rebels had stole from the [illegible] Erastus did not not hear what Co he belonged to we have our water to draw about one mile the corn looks good no more at present write soon Direct as before From your Brother Robert to Helen Rogers
