Kentucky Oct 5 / 62 Brother William haveing Just been dismissed from Divine Service I feel inclined to write you a few lines we have been pretty buisy Since we came to kentucky we have had to march up & down the Country to go out picketing & Scouting So you See we have not had much time to Drill we do not expect to be attacked by the enemy where we now are located but we are liable to be mooved at any time and I think we Shal be mooved Soon perhaps to Morrow I am well at present & have been except a couple of Spels of Camp Distemper which lasted for a Short time I Stand Camp life ful as well a I expected I am not near as fleshy as I was while in Michigan & I feel all the better for not being So I have been weighed 180 pounds about two weeks ago perhaps now 175 feel tough & harty there has been two or three Deaths in our Regament since we came here one of them Died yesterday to Day is Sunday on Sundays we have to Scout and clean our guns scour the buttons on our Dress Coats clean the buckles on our belts brush up in good Stile by 10 Oclock the comes Inspection Soon goes knapsacks with Blankets on inside Over Coats nicely rolled up & strapped on the outside then form in line after which the captain inspects our guns then cartridge Boxes then knapSacks which takes about a couple of hours then we are dismi then comes Dinner then get ready for Divine Service then at 4 oclock comes gard mounting after which Comes Dress parrade So by this time it is Sunset then we get Supper, at 8½ oclock the Bugle Sounds for Roll call at 9 the Bugle Sounds then lights out at Sun rise the Bugle Sounds & every one must answer to the call of his name if any remain in their tents they are put on extra Duty Such as Standing guard or knap Sack Drill for two hours so you See we have to be on our tops Most of the time we were camped at first when we came to this State on the Bank of the Ohio River Near covington the country is hilly there now we are Some 20 miles South west from covington the country is more level the Farms Does not Show that industry pride that the farms do in michigan there is Some farm houses but you do not See the yards fenced up in Such Stile as in Michigan there is large lots of corn here and the Cattle & horses Sheep hogs are running through them at their pleasure there are four regaments here & Some cavalry I used to think that Soldier would know Something more about mooves of the Army & how thing were going than those of us much at home but I find they do not know half as ^ for we do not know when we are to moove until we are ordered to Strike tents or perhaps to have rations in haversacks for two or three Day & then we do not know where we are going to until we stop & when we Stop we know nothing how long or Short our Stay may bee I this wil find you all wel please tel Emily when you get this that you have received aletter from me & Say that I am wel please write Soon Direct to [crossed out] [Cincinnatti] Co [illegible] 18th Mich I remain your Dutiful Brother Reg't of infantry James Lickly Cincinnatti Ohio
