June 18 [illegible] Sister Malvina you wished me to write about the Negroes, what Shall I write about them. I have writen a little about them two or three times you said you wished they would get as [illegible] as they talk of. So do I. but I Should not want to be in the [illegible] with them. although some perhaps would make good Fighting men on the Retreat from Danville, Ky some that we had in the Regiment threw their Canteens away. & took leg Bale for Security . Cap Moore had one carrying his Blanket. but Darky got Scart & Run. so Cap thought he better take his blanket himself [remainder of page illegible due to tear in paper] I believe them to be about a happy a people as there is they live well dress well, & ride out in Splendid Carriages & they think they are some if they get a wench to ride with them they have nothing to care for, if they were free I Should not want them to go in to the Northern States how would you like to have the North filled up with the Negroes, I see Negroes here every day sometimes Hundreds of them but I must Close I expected a letter from [illegible] to day but did not get it I received a pack of 20 envelopes yesterday from [illegible] Co.
