Tennessee June 18th /63 Respected Brother & Sister I received your letters writen the 14th this Morning. & was glad to hear from you. the day is fine. weather not quite as warm as it has been for two or three days past, but I presume it is warmer here than it is there. People are getting their Harvesting well Started. Some are done & wheat Stacked. new Potatoes. & Green Apples. Sell at $4.00 per Bush Cherries have been Ripe for Some time Cherries. Rasp Berries. Goose Berries. Sell at. from up to 30.cts. per qt Strawberries all gone I saw Some large & fine cucumbers at the Market Ralph is on Provost. Guard. to day James also. I was on yesterday. therefore am excused to day from duty I cannot say that I am well to day & have not been for a number of days I came [crossed out] [in last Night] to the quarters last Night because I did not feel well. I do not know what is the Matter. my Face is Swolen Some. I do not think it is quite as bad as it was last Night and I have a Severe Head ache. but I guess I will be all Right in a day or two the Company is usualy well few except- ions. did I ever tell you of the Death of Chaney Ashly. he Died about a month ago he was about 50 years old the oldest man in our Company. he had a Son that went into the Army & Died. & then the old man came I well [illegible] him from the time we left Camp Woodbury. he was no Military Man, but I believed him to be a Christian Man. a true Christian Patriot. a lover of Country but he has gone. many times I have Pittyed him, on the long & tiresome Marches he would never Shrink He would go as long as he could Stand. his life was worthy of an example I believe his Death was for his Benefit we have just been to dinner I am Sorry to hear of the Copper Heads at the North. I wish they were obliged to go at the Front of the Battle. and forced to fight. no I wish they could all be united, & go of their own free will it is now well on to a year since I left there. and I expect to Stay a little over two years more. & then I am comeing Home on a Visit if I live & have any health then I am comeing up there after them Straw Berries. Drink & Butter you have them ready. Jude was just here he says he is on Patrol to day we have great times on patrol but I Still love Picketing the Best I love to be out in the Country where we can get milk. Berries. Apples, etc we do not hear much news from Vicksburg lately Sometimes they have a Skirmish out a little way down the River, [illegible] we are quartered in about the Centre of the City in the Court House which Stands on Public Square, about 100 [illegible] rods East of the Capital, a little west of here is the Market House & east is the River the River runs angling its coarse here is nearly North. Bearing a little to the west in going three or 4 miles, it runs about west. the City lyes on rather [crossed out] [a] a low piece of ground on the West Side of the River, or South west. the Capital is on the highest piece of Ground there is in the City the Capital is a very Splendid Building, across the River is a Railroad Bridge. perhaps 40 or 50 feet high. a man fell of the other day. on the tracks & into the water. & Killed him Self the River is low, but Small Steamers can run up as far as this they catch Some Fish in the River at the North part of the City is a Sulpher Spring I have been there a few times & got a drink but I must close write soon as convenient my Respects to all I remain your Brother A.W.
