Albert W. Barber writes to brother William and sister Malvina, noting that Philip is not well, but is improving, and James is well and on patrol. He writes that he is happy to hear Charles is improving. Barber details the crops that are being harvested locally, and describes how much they are being sold for. He continues by asking about the cane seed he had sent to William and Malvina and inquires about how it is growing. Barber writes that he received the box from Malvina, with bread, butter, and cheese. He continues by noting that their lieutenant went on furlough and has yet to return. Furthermore, Captain J.D. Randall started home several days ago, and will likely visit Wright to say hello to the men's families. Barber writes that he believes most soldiers would reenlist if they were mustered out of the army, however he claims that he would rather come home. Barber continues his letter on September 10, detailing that while on duty he crossed the river to gather some gum-tree-bark for tea. Barber concludes his letter by writing of a prayer meeting held the previous night.
